Personally I can not imagine getting new flooring and cabinets and trying to match with the furniture that you plan on refinishing eventually. I'd do my remodel to what I plan to live with for many years and just deal with the furniture as is till the day comes to refinish it. In other words, don't base any of your of your color choices based on the current color of the old furniture.

You have 4 out of 5 items showing "undertone" match. The only odd-man out is the dark-gray/brown vinyl sample (Left in 1st pic; floor sample in second pic). The table leaf isn't the only piece of furniture that has the orange/red tones. You have more than one item that is in the warm tones.

If it was JUST the table, I would recommend a LARGE area rug to prevent the woods from clashing (they will still clash....but the rug will tone it down so that you can live with it). but you have other items that are warm.

For me, the answer is clear - kick the gray vinyl colour to the curb. And just to be clear, the next trend that is already making it to the magazines = warm tones. Gray has already had it's day in the sun and is now packing up the beach toys and going home.

That's my view....it is your home. You must make the decision yourself. The question I would ask is this: How many area rugs will you need to SEPARATE the wood tones from the gray vinyl floor if you go that route? Are you happy with that idea? All that money spent on flooring and you cover it up because of colour clashes?

If you put grayish brown floors with walnut or chocolate brown cabs you are going to have a gloomy room. You need to lighten the floor rather than go dark so, to answer your question, to me the only one that would work is the medium one in front of the dark walnut. You could also choose to go with a deeper floor and lighten the cabinet choice. To camo the table you could always get a great looking table scarf and redo the seats of the chairs.

I think I've settled on a few points to help me make some decisions:

1) I can't decorate the room based on one piece of furniture, specifically, the table because it will eventually have to be refinished. (We plan on using it as an everyday table/harvest table.)

2) I have to be careful of making the room too dark.

I've spent some time thinking about this and I think, in the end, what I really want when I'm done is walnut cupboards. I think I'm going to start with that point and look at some floor colours and counter top which will compliment walnut cupboards.

So, although I'm back to the drawing board to choose some colours, I'm going to try a different approach. Trying to match/compliment the table only resulted in me having to possibly not have some colours that I really wanted to begin with.

This is a huge reno for us for many reasons, so I'm trying to take my time and make sure that I get the look I really want. We plan on living with out choices for 10-20 years (minus paint!), so I need to be 100% sure!! :)
