We put red oak in our last home with a clear finish. It had pink undertones. We have 1919 white oak in this house and it has a clear oil finish. It has beautiful golden undertones that blend very nicely with the chestnut stained trim which has amber shellac finish. We also like the lighter floors contrasted against the darker trim. our flooring guy recently patched a 1x2" area in one room. He was able to find historic scrap oak which was feathered in, again with the oil finish. Can't tell where the patch is. Don't know if you will have to deal with feathering in against any existing floor.

I ended up getting the red oak stairs and the white oak floor. Did white oak, no stain, water poly. Stained the stairs darker to make it look intentional. I might have been able to get away with keeping the red oak stairs natural, too, if the floor installers had been asked to, and they had looked for boards that were redder and installed them near the stairs. Did you ever have any luck with the banister? i have white oak, red oak, and fir in my house trying to make it all match or complement the look of natural white oak! If you found something that worked can you please share an after photo and the color used? thanks!

Does your floor manufacturer make a matching stair cladding? If you do that, you don’t need to have oak treads. Another option is to do a beautiful contrasting color of stain on the stairs. You could pull the colors together with handrail or baluster or post colors. Adding a runner on the stairs, or painting the risers would give you more options to tie in the floor colors. If you really want to match wood, dark stain is worth a try, but lighter colors are really tough. I matched a red oak transition strip to a dark chocolate brown stone tile once. I had to keep mixing and adding stain. It worked only because it was a dark brown color. It’s hard to neutralize red and yellow tones.
