Seeking cozy armchair for a modern couch
Hello Houzz!
I'm seeking help to find the perfect armchair to add to my new living room. My partner and I have different styles - he loves mid century modern while I dream of living in a french country house. We're trying to find ways to accommodate both of our styles/likes without getting overly complicated. We just moved into a new place and are starting with the large furniture first.
We ended up buying a sofa that is modern, and now we just need to add an armchair to complete our space. I was eyeing English roll armchairs, but alas, I don't think that will be the best option design wise for our space. My musts for armchairs: something I can curl up in and use on a daily basis opposed to an accent piece. I should add that I'm a tall gal, so need something a little larger to fit my frame. I don't love mid-century modern, so I want to stay away from adding more pieces that scream that style. I was thinking the Barton armchair from Serena and Lily may be a good fit for what I'm looking for, but hoping to find another alternative under $800.

5 years agoHave you looked at Room and Board? They have a similar chair and lots of options for upholstery. Both of these come with an ottoman and are less than the Serena and Lily. If you have a store near you, you can sit in the chairs to see how they fit you; buying online can be so tricky.

Oakleyok, the child's chair belonged to my DH's grandparents -the matching "adult chair" resides with his uncle -- no one sits on the little chair, but we like having it on display Rosie, I will work on a floor plan. I have been busy with other things but decided I need to do this so we are ready to entertain this fall. We rarely if ever actually use the fireplace (maybe 3 times in the 25 years we have lived here). You stated it beautifully "You need a room that invites people in and allows them to circulate freely and then find a seat that fits them and, in a few cases, that can be turned to join a conversation or face a speaker, like that nice scroll-arm chair. " My question is how to create a "room that invites people in". Ellendi, we do have a love seat and sofa now because that's what we had when we lived in New York -- 2 sofas sound appealing to me because we can always use more seating -- when you say to line up the sofas with the fireplace, I assume you mean perpendicular to the fireplace and not parallel -is that right? -the chairs are just near the round table because we brought the table from NYC and then my MIL gave us those chairs when she downsized -- we love the china cabinet -we bought it when we were first married and lived in London - it might fit in our dining room but unfortunately that it is the one room in the house that is small -we do sometimes bring in dining room chairs for our meetings and parties Teacats -thanks for the advice about how to use our existing furniture -our sofa is shot, so we will be replacing that and probably the love seat at the same time --it is an excellent point about covering up the air grate -i will have to find something that can be in front of it without blocking airflow -maybe a table with slim bench chairs underneath -and i like the idea of a tall mirror over the fireplace Camlan -i love your suggestion of moving our current furniture around to figure out what works for us -we do not use our dining room much as we have a breakfast room connected to the kitchen where we usually eat -we never go to the dining room from the entry way -and i don't think our friends do so often either One other point -- we are willing to consider a different rug - I like this rug a lot (it has some of Omar Khayyam's Rubiat on it) -but DH thinks we should get something more modern -and we could, of course, get a different size Thanks again!...See MoreInexpensive but ok build quality accent/armchair source?
Comments (16)Riley is also a cutie. :) Vinny is allowed on the sofa and other furniture also - he only hangs out on the floor by the kitchen, and he has a squishy mat there to lie on. But he gets a little anxious sometimes so I figure having a few places where he can go and be with us but not on top of people is good, plus he seems to like the coziness of a chair sometimes. (He also has a crate in the living room that he does enjoy, but he can't see the TV from there. Or into the dining room and kitchen, or out the windows. So at the end of the school day, a chair from which he could watch the kids go by would be much preferable.) (He adores children. I think he wants his own human infant, but I refuse to get him one of them. :D He will have to settle for the 12 year old.) The crate is a whole different problem, since most places don't seem to want to make more attractive crates in larger sizes. We'll probably see if we can get someone local to build us something - crate on the bottom and hutch with shelves on top or something along those lines. Or we might build the crate into the coat closet and just have closet above for shorter coats and jackets. (We have another space that is a little further from the door that could be used as a secondary closet for longer stuff. Comments (2)I'd create two separate areas, yes one, smaller one, next to the windows-two armchairs with a table between them. probably would go with something legged..more visually light, as to obscure windows the less..or give an impression I'm obscuring them the less:) another, bigger one, for TV watching..a sofa..an angled chair on the right much like you have now, but looking smaller..I might consider doing smth different since several chairs in the room..maybe a rocking chair? I might also go for an ottoman instead of a coffee table-can serve as additional seating if needed. I might also find a garden stool as one of the side tables-again, opportunity for additional sitting, if a lot people use a room at once. Round shapes will also break the lines of all the rectangular furniture, so I'd definitely take it into account when shopping. I also might do something patterned to add interest..say two armchairs, or an ottoman, or a chair in bigger sitting area.. Rugs would help to delineate different zones, so another idea to consider. Comments (1230)I feel like when I post something I like, I get told to just go in person and that I'm not being helped to go forward and how it's not helping when when I just posted stuff I like. Ideas thrown here has helped me. I agree with those who are saying go with neutral, quieter, go with what you like, so I feel like I am moving forward. So it can get discouraging/overwhelming here so I don't know...I might take a break from here. Bluemarble, is exactly right. I've said before too. I'm not interested in shopping in person for many reasons including the pandemic. Even if it wasn't for not going out, I've still always been an online shopper mostly when it comes to furniture and what's what I feel comfortable with right now. And bluemarble is spot on that I knew I didn't like the table the next day I got it and it's what I felt threw me off and once it's gone, I'm trying to go back to neutrals/cozy and what I like - earthy colors, minimalism, metallic, grays, neutrals and yes......a cozy feel. Even if it's industrial or farmhouse, scandinavian, or boho, I can't worry about that. As long as I can focus on neutrals/cozy room idea, then I should be fine. 5 years agohave you seen the movie "the break up"? not a great movie... but i always loved how they designed the couples living room. your sofa reminded me of it. they paired a button tufted sofa like yours with a leather sofa. i thought it looked amazing. so thinking along those lines, i think a cool leather chair would be fun and make your space a little more eclectic than midcentury... i'd love to see a leather chesterfield in a dark charcoal leather with your sofa. or if that's to bold, just a leather chair in a dark charcoal leather.

You could also play up the difference between the sofa and chair, by using a chair like this, from Ballard, as long as you keep the colors similar. Remember that in the fifties and sixties, MCM and French Provincial often co-existed in the same living rooms : ) ,

Adding another picture as I mapped out where the chair could go. The tape on the ground shows a chair that is 43" wide, so can definitely scale down from there. I keep going back to roll arm chairs, but I just can't decide if it will work for our space. There seems to be differing opinions on mixing and matching sofa arm styles.
I like the way it looks in the below picture, but maybe that's because it's all one color? Our couch is a grey/blue and I'm having so much trouble finding the right hue to match it. As you can see, our couch color changes a lot based on the light.
