Don't know where you live, but I think you will greatly improve the energy efficiency of your house if you only focus on the attic and windows. We don't have insulation in most of our walls and when we improved the weather stripping around windows and doors last year, we cut our winter heating bills alot. We're in the Midwest. I wouldn't worry about the walls. Please don't say you live near the Arctic Circle!

This is great--thanks to all of you!! I'm so glad it will be simple to fix! I am a DIY-er and figure most things out myself and was worried I'd run into something that would be difficult to fix. Now, I'm replacing a combo switch (3-way combined with 2-way) right now and had the neighbor over for five hours yesterday trying to figure it out. Looks like the PO really made a mess of some of the wiring, and we still didn't get it fixed after all that time, we just capped off the wires. I think I'll just call in a pro on that one though, instead of trying to explain all of the details to you guys. Thanks again for all of your help!!

Do you have bottoms already? What style (e.g., are hinges exposed, is there space between doors when closed)? You don't choose additional pieces in a vacuum.

I would paint the doors. Any color. Without seeing the entire room, or see the colors you are working with throughout the home, I won't suggest a color. I would Beef up the trim moulding around the door(s) keep it white as the featured trim in the room. With the highlighting of the trim/wainscotting, I'd paint the walls a hint of color to show off the features. some fabric on the windows for texture? I would leave the bar the natural wood tone you have going. shelving in the alcove, nice... I would personally go with a black or Ebony shelf, but same... I don't know the look you're going for. Keep the woods in the same family, Is the floor carpet, or an area rug? I'd work on the flooring, Bars and carpet don't go.
