Excellent video, tmc2009! It made me wonder how many flowers a hummingbird would have to visit to get the same amount of nectar it can guzzle from the feeder in less than a minute. No wonder the hummers get territorial and guard "their" feeders.

I have domes over my feeders and the birds seem to appreciate the shelter in the rain.

You have the best videos, tmc! I've often wondered if rain can get in those holes and dilute the syrup? It's never seemed to bother the hummers. I love it when I'm watering the garden and they come by. I turn the hose on a gentle spray and they love getting under it. Once, I even saw a hummer taking a bath in some rain that had collected on a leaf. Such absolutely wonderful little beings!

Without a doubt, this has been the worst year ever for fruit. Cold wet springs meant poor to no pollination. Endless rain spring and summer. In one stretch in June, we had 18 inches in 18 days. Then triple digit heat w/humidity spelled an end to most berries. Even my TC's in the shade dried up. Cicadas devastated young branches and all blueberries. Didn't really matter to the peaches and plums because of all the disease and curculio and poor pollination. Now, we have had only nine tenths of an inch of rain over the last 2 months. Pretty much everything is toast. So much for the fall raspberries. No gooseberries,black raspberries, or currants, and a thousand new strawberries were lost to floods, weeds, deer, and now drought. Rhubarb was good, and out of 1oo feet of grapes, I got maybe 20 lbs. Stink bugs are healthy. Bring on 2012!!

I got another 1.6 and I'm losing track of the total since this all started. When I looked this morning I thought did I forget to dump it last time. It is wonderful for August. I am not complaining but I think the tomatoes will start having problems in this warm humid weather. As I said before the Rose of Sharon is looking great. I had two front lawn mower tires flat and off the rims Friday and I am still working on that problem.

Susan, Hummers love playing in the artificial "rain". I often turn on the sprinkler or mister for them for a few minutes on hot summer afternoons. They'll play in it for as long as I leave the water on. If I turn on the water at the same time every day, after a few days, they are sitting there waiting for me when I come outside. They are so smart! Sometimes if a feeder is out of nectar and I don't know it, they come to the kitchen window and put on a big show to get my attention so I'll come outside and fill the feeder. We have had huge hordes of hummers migrating through for about a month now. I've noticed a lot less playing this week, and more serious feeding and flight. I believe they understand it is time to head south because the migrating ones aren't sticking around and playing for a few days like the earlier ones were. Dawn

I feel your pain. I've never experienced drought before, being from coastal Louisiana. I was just thinking this last week: gardeners in the area should unite, and decide to buy and hang out a small inexpensive clothesline, and hang our clothes out there, all on one day. Or we could all agree to wash the car on a particular day. That should make it rain.

I think the rain does bring in spores and pollen that make the syrup spoil quicker especially in this heat. I change it every couple of days.
