Need a little help with small living room furniture layout
Comments (33)Okay, let me see.......where did I file those pics of the pics.....duhhhh. Yaya, I will put my peabrain into gear and see what I can find. I did upload an album for the HouseMA, which means Massachusetts, which I'll link to below, but there are tons of IN PROCESS photos of the various rooms. But of the small parlor/living room, with that row of pics....which I love, BTW, for the subject matter as well as the frames.... I'll look for the best one and insert it HERE. Look for the albums about the Massachusetts Cape @ Webshots. I took the pictures with my digital camera the day we went to Mystic Seaport CT. It was in December, and the place was almost deserted, so there were no folks in the shots. As a boat captain, I knew of Mystic Seaport for many years, and I was in hog heaven being there. So the pictures meant a lot to me. The second image from the right is a bow shot of the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan, before it went on the ways/weighs to be restored/rebuilt. Fantastic and beautiful, a work of art. Then I saw the end of every bowsprit (pointy end of the ship) had a star carved into it and usually painted gold or sometimes blue. This is a tradition with old sailing vessels, a good luck sign, which meant "follow your lucky star," and I'd always, on every boat I worked on, painted a blue star (5 point) on the bow of the boat. It is a sailor tradition. I just love the traditions of the sea. Seeing one from the "old days" was awesome. That is why I love the last picture to the right. And, of course, I took some figurehead shots. You know of course the ancient mariners would strap a live virgin to the bow, as a sacrifice to the sea gods for their safe return. Eventually, they carved and painted wooden figureheads, not all female, as figureheads. I guess they ran out of virgins? If you have a chance to visit the Mystic Seaport, it is a real treat. Comments (4)I currently live in a Cape Cod style home. We don't have a TV area. The staircase leads directly to a small hall with bedroom doors on each side. Given that you have enough room for a central room for a flex space, it's not a problem for whoever is using the room to go through the bedrooms into the baths. I suggest you put the baths on each end. The TV area in the middle as shown above. This makes both rooms ensuite. Be sure to plan for closets in each bedroom and a larger linen/storage closet somewhere in the flex space. The dormers are good for student desks if the windows can be placed high enough to accommodate the built-in desk. This is a great floorplan. We are able to shut off the entire upstairs when not in use. It makes for a very efficient use of space. The rooms upstairs float in their own box within the building envelope. This makes for very quiet bedrooms....See MoreCape cod first floor layout help!
Comments (13)Your house is not Cape Cod. You would either have a full Cape with a center chimney, or a three quarter Cape or a half Cape…where the fireplace(s) would heat the abutting rooms. No Cape has a front door which, directly, enters into a main room. I know the 1950’s house such as yours, built after WW II. it has possibilities, but you need the best advice from someone who knows that era of building. Post war homes shot up all over the country. Loans were abundant for the veterans and building was fast and cheap. That is not to say your house was built sub par, but, at the time, no one imagined the house would need additions. A good builder will appreciate your home and advise you....See MoreHelp with exterior colors for Cape Cod update!
Comments (16)I love when the exterior of a home acts as an introduction to the interior. If I were selecting the colors from the picture posted by @Jilly from Maria Killam's website I would want to walk into a home with fall colors, not a home that was decorated with coastal colors. I am painting the exterior of my front door a deep red. When you open the door you walk into a foyer with purple red and green slate. The red door will match the red in the flooring. Red is an accent color that is used throughout my home. You may also notice that the pink brick wall (back of living room fireplace wall is the same brick as my home. The plants that I chose for the front garden include a red dwarf maple, silver coral bells (purple and green leaves, pink flowers, and blue pacific juniper, pulling in some blue greens, deep reds and purple tones....See MoreCaleb Brown
