Family/great room - help with paint/rug/ottoman
I will get some more photos when I am home, but I wanted to run some questions by you awesome people! We have been in our house a year now and have done a few things we wanted to do (adding full fridge/full freezer to the kitchen, replaced some lighting, worked on the landscaping, bought furniture for our great room/eat in kitchen, etc). However, I am still debating about the rest of the great room (paint/ rug/ ottoman). And would love some ideas!
I don't like the red accent wall in our great room (I painted over the same red color that was also in the kitchen since it was making it so dark with the cabinetry and the black granite counter tops).
I love the idea of doing a nice green, teal, or blue color in here. but I'm also hesitant to make the room too dark and to match well with our brown/gray sectional, furniture, and stone fireplace. I need to be warm enough to not make it way to "gray" in there. I am looking for advice on whether you'd paint just one wall (or two?) an accent color (would you do the same red wall, or the wall we have the the TV on)? The wall opposite the fireplace is a pretty solid, long wall, but not really a focal point right now in the room.
The two windows in the room are floor to ceiling, and have white plantation shutters on them. Tall 10 foot ceilings :)
I'm just stuck with what walls to paint, and coordinating a new large rug and a round ottoman to go with our furniture.

Comments (4)Is the soffit which divides the two spaces painted a different color or is that just the lighting? The built ins are beautiful. I love the paint color! Can you tell us what your style is? Do you like straight lines? Do you like color? Of the top of my head I would say rich color rugs, curtains and lots of lamps. Those are the things I always want in my home. Not to mention art. Comments (10)Yes, the chairs and table on the left are not in the room anymore. Those were from before I had gotten the bar. That room is new and I have just been ordering things to try them out and then returning. I do like the bar but thats really the only thing that I am tied to. I have no rug in there now and am looking for suggestions. I am as far from a designer as you can get. I do not have a good eye for these things, but love reading all the advice here. Comments (6)It looks like the best thing is to start with a new 3 seat sofa. Since you have the TV above the mantle, we assume you want your seating positioned that way. If it were my room this is what I'd do: choose a rug, it should be large so that the sectional front legs sit on it. That will give some colors to choose for the accents. NO accent wall. An accent wall should be a wall without windows, doors, FP, you don't have that. I'm not loving your TV arrangement but assuming it's new I would bring the ladders in closer to make it look like 1 piece and put only 1 piece per shelf and all the same color. What you have displayed now does not have any pizazz. For example blue if that is in your rug. If the TV console is not new I would replace it with one that is at 25% wider than the TV. I love your crown molding but it does weird things on your FP wall. I would paint the kitchen & family room a light neutral color. BM Edgecomb Gray is a good one but you need to try it in your room. No pillows on the puffy sectional, just a couple of throws. A piece of art over the FP, the same size as the fire box.
