If installing onto existing box, make sure the box can support the weight.

Also, you want to be able to operate fan/light(if using), independently from wall switch for convenience - if you have older wiring, this may not be an option.

This will be a totally new install - we are using knowledgeable electrician. DH has arranged it and of course has no clue as to all the options and varieties. You know, like just get a ceiling fan. I am totally on board with getting a ceiling fan, just trying to sort through what is the right type/size etc. I did read through the article (thank you for the link) as well as some others. Then style of course will totally overwhelm me. We have traditional/transitional style but I think for the fans I don't want too traditional looking.

What styles do you have?

We have traditional/transitional decor - a 4 poster bed in light wood. Generally prefer orb or brass to silver tones.

To give you an idea of scale, our bedroom is about 13' x 13'. My ceiling fan is 48" and is more than adequate for our needs. It is positioned in the center of the room, but closer to the foot of our bed than the center. We do not use the remote, because for us, it's a pain. The batteries die, and that always seems to happen in the middle of the night. When in use, we typically use the lowest setting, which offers us a nice, little breeze. I personally don't like the higher settings, because at warp speed, my eyes water and/or I awaken with a dry, itchy throat. I cannot suggest a style, as I simply selected one for our room that I liked. It came from Lowe's or Home Depot. My home is more functional than aesthetic. The Houzzer decor pros would most likely gasp and then sigh. ☺

I think that the size recommendations can be misleading. In a bedroom, you don't "live" in the corners of the room (recommendations are so you get the benefit for the whole room), but that's not where you will be...you will be kind of in the middle of one wall. In my bedroom with my four poster centered on the long wall, the fan (which is in the middle of the room) hits us just fine. It's 48"

If you have a light, I would say that the majority of styles that look traditional will work. Ours happens to be off white and speckledy (came with the house) and I didn't think much about it, but since we got the four poster, I'm glad that it's not a focal point...

So a lot depends on where your bed will be...

Also, look at reviews. My mom put a fan in her sunroom and she JUST went by looks. It's absolutely useless as far as cooling goes.

I am having this running argument with DH as to him you want a ceiling fan you get a ceiling fan. He has no idea of the options and just narrowing down the size I get varying opinions. Very good point pennydesign can I ask you what are the dimensions (approx of your room ? our bed is towards the center but definitely not the center).

I'm going to guess about 15x18 with the bed (king) on the long wall.

We love ours in the BR. We had it installed before we even moved in.

Some CFs come with a light but can be installed without it. I don't like overhead light, esp in a bedroom, so we installed ours without. Don't feel like you have to have a light there if you don't want it.

Okay, honest opinion....Those are contemporary and your bed is traditional. So I would not have chosen those. Also I would want five blades...I know it makes it slower, but in bed, I don't want a gale force wind on me.

A fan that hugs the ceiling will be more stable, easier to balance the blades, and less wobble than one with a post hanging down.

Our master bedroom is 13'x20' with a 5 blade 52" fan in center of room with switch on wall beside the light switch. This size works great for size of room. We bought Hampton Bay brand. Other rooms have this brand and have lasted for many years. Some fans come with reversible blades. One side light color and other side a dark color.

Word of warning......do not buy a cheap fan on special from Home Depot (or other place). If you pay $37 you will get a cheap quality fan. My husband learned the hard way and it cost more for installation due to having to buy another fan and replace the cheap one. Electricians are not cheap!

If fan is installed in a light fixture place, be sure and have the structure reinforced in order to support the weight of the fan.

That is a really good fan though . The madreno has promise too, but it has the pull chains which I think I would NOT prefer.

I am still liking the minka aire wave, and also looking more at some hunter fans. the palermo.. I think I seem to be gravitating towards more contemporary which is not usually my taste - for whatever reason.

Yes I have been hearing/reading lots of good things about Hunter and it's pretty moderately priced. I still cannot decide about the light or not and regarding the remote, it just seems convenient-- but will also for sure be getting a wall switch. Just trying to make the right decision regarding the actual fan.

We have ceiling fans in almost every room with the exception of the kitchen, and if I'd had my way there'd be on in there too! But alas, with the recessed lighting above the blades, the fan would drive you crazy.

I live in central Oklahoma, ceiling fans are a necessity.

2 - 5 bladed, 60" fans in the living room, with pole mounts. This ceiling is vaulted. ALL have light kits, but we rarely use them. This is what we have in the LR:

All fans are centered in their respective rooms, 5 bladed fan in the MBR, however, our bed is also centered in the room.

The guest rooms & the office also have fans. These are ceiling huggers.

The office fan & light has a remote control. The absolute only way you can control the fan is with the remote. (Hence the reason we don't have remotes on all of them. LOL) There's a switch that will turn the electricity on & off, but that fan & light will not come on w/out the remote. (And it takes a squirrely battery to operate it.)

We have the fans set to push the air down year round. They're set on medium speed, and the have the chains that hang down to adjust the speed. I cannot reach the ones in the LR, but hubs can. I can reach the bedroom fans if I'm on my tippy toes. (I'm 5'2") I don't even see the chains anymore.

I totally agree with purchasing a quality fan. Hunter is good brand. We've also had great luck with Harbor Breeze.

Don't overthink it. Find one you like and go for it!

With 8' ceilings you need a flush mount fan, and for a room your size, 52" should work well.

If you want it to be a feature or not is, I think, personal preference...I do find the light handy for switching on when I walk into the room, but if I didn't have one, it wouldn't be the end of the world. It's just a convenience. The on-off chains, if that's a concern, can just be taken off--there will be a hole, but you would have to have good eyesight, (or be a bit ocd) to notice them.

Not sure you need 52 though....the end of your bed is probably about the center of the room, right? So if you consider the bed area to be the total area of what you need the breeze to hit (unless you sit somewhere in the bedroom, too) then you should be fine with the next size down.

Bedrooms are not like other rooms where you need the circulation all over the room...it's just for comfort when you sleep.

See this is where I am getting confused.... you raise an excellent point that we really only need the breeze by the bed. So if the bed is off center and the fan is in the center of the room------are you saying then that a smaller fan would be appropriate? and more blades better than less blades? So sorry to be so dense but each time I read a comment I think of something else.

I don’t know size of my fan, guessing 48”? It seems small for the room but we wanted max comfort when sleeping so located approx over lower half of bed. We have bedroom seating for tv viewing. If fan were bigger, the air would have contributed to eye dryness, so we chose slightly smaller for that reason.

If you're further than about 7 feet from the fan you might feel a difference in the breeze than if you're right underneath, but other than that it will feel about the same. You won't ever have it on high unless you have no a/c and it's 90 degrees.

Just a suggestion, I knew where the bed placement would be, so I had the electrician center the fan over my bed. He didn't want to, said lights and fans need to be in the center of the room. But 14 years later I still think it was the best decision. Looks fine and is very comfortable at night

Just curious. A bed is normally the main feature in the bedroom so shouldn’t it be centered or mostly centered? Any reason it can’t be repositioned?

I would prefer the bed to be centered, but the layout of the room does not permit it. We have a large dresser which I think shows a bit in the photo, as well as 2 night tables and an armoire. The way the windows and closet doors are positioned this really was about the only way to arrange the furniture. I think potentially I could put the dresser in between the windows, and then scoot everything on the wall with the bed and night tables over... but the dresser would extend beyond the windows (which would be partially behind the dresser and there are also floor vents there)...........so the arrangement is what it is. Other than not being centered, it looks pretty good and functional.

Still trying to figure out the fan for the room. I like most styles and enjoy mixing them up in small doses.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with the flush mount idea. Even the shortest possible down rod, the 4" length that makes the fan body look like it's right agains the canopy, moves air more efficiently than a hugger. I've always had 8' ceilings and after my first mistake have always had short downrods, except for the place I"m currently renting, which has useless flush mounts.

I too have dry eyes and sleep with an eye mask to prevent air movement from making it worse.

Too funny indeed. I was just going to see if I could find it. I am updating because I decided to call Hansen which had the most friendly website. They actually give advice (sounds like a match made in heaven for me) and I put on my big girl panties and deliberated and took some guidance and thought a bit and ORDERED a fan. They were very good in that some of what I was considering was not really appropriate for my room or there were better choices. They did not upsell. I ordered this- Emerson designer with remote and wall switch and all in Venetian Bronze!!

I initially thought I wanted white, and still think it's classic.......but they have room viewer feature and I loved the venetian bronze.
