Comments (8)Great question, because we are facing the exact same thing. DH has been mulling it over for a couple weeks on how to get it flush mounted in an otherwise frameless cabinet. I finally looked at it and said 'forget it.' Am I really going to notice after it's in? Because the cabinet it's going in is deep and next to shallower ones, it will have an end panel that can maybe come out next the oven a bit. If it doesn't, that black line will show and I'll cook in it just fine anyway. Can you tell I'm just tired of all the housebuilding details? So many things we probably won't think twice about while we're living there, but commiserate over so long when building! Best wishes and I hope someone comes up with a very helpful answer to your question. I do remember someone talking about how they had a wider than 30" cabinet so they could have the flush installation. Seekingadvice or Pecanpie maybe? Comments (2)If you want to go up the interior wall, I suggest that you build the wall with 2 x 6s to provide 5.5 inches of internal gap. Then a 4 or 5 inch by 12 or 14 inch duct will fit. This will cost two inches of room on one side or the other. Eight inch circular duct has an area of about 50 square inches. 4 x 14 is a bit more (56), but square duct has more frictional pressure loss than round duct. If I were doing it, I would use fire-code sheet rock on those walls, and insulate the duct with mineral wool. This would minimize possible rattles from the blower, which I would put on the roof if possible, and provide some slight additional protection in case of a grease fire. Use only galvanized steel duct (stainless steel would also be OK :). kas...See MoreReplacing low-voltage recessed lighting transformer?
Comments (9)Just wanted to report back success here. I did order an EL1499ICA online, although what was shipped was an EL1499ICA-L, noted only on the mfr site as an economy version - but looked dimensionally similar to the original specs. I scheduled to have the electrician do it, less about the electrical than worrying about traversing 20' of attic and accidentally stepping through the ceiling drywall somewhere. Was very simple 10 minutes for the electrician to swap out the entire housing. Before he came, I did look at the housing and there is no way to remove the rectangular sealed box to just replace the transformer - it's basically riveted shut. He was the original electrician from the remodel - said 1 in a 100 of these fails, no good reason... I asked about what happens if one of the downstairs transformers fails, given no attic. He did confirm he could also access from the can itself via the ceiling, as brickeyee said, but it just takes more time and effort that way. I did see that removing three screws allows the can to drop out, although it did seem quite a pain to try to unscrew the old transformer from the housing blind (when your hand and screwdriver have reached into the opening). Would be a very challenging DIY attempt. Replacement housing works great, and learned a few things as a general DIY-er. Thanks, esp brickeyee, for the advice....See MoreVery low clearance garage door--can I install opener?
Comments (21)Thanks, snoonyb. I'm not sure though that I understand your statement regarding setting the operator back 10' from the full open position of the door along with some type of adapter and "J" bracket. Would you by chance have any pictures to help explain? I've got a 7' high door. Ceilings are taller - maybe just under 8' (e.g. 7' 10"). My issue is I have 2 large beams that are parallel to the garage door holding up the floor joists above them (below a garage), which have a clearance of 7' 3". And they sit right at 8'0" from the garage door. Looks like I would be able to install a garage door using low profile tracks, but clearance of an electric opener is questionable as the door and any track would have to fit within that 7'3" clearance when open. I'm hopeful but looking at other options as well. This is what lead me to this page and my question regarding any new technology that came around since this thread started. Any help or comments is much appreciated!...See Morerockybird
