I think Milly Rey is saying what I suspect also: at some point, your house was remodeled and someone removed some walls and or elements that were intrinsic to the MCM style. The pony wall is probably not original to the house, and the railing around the stair well is definitely not original. The bi-fold doors and those contemporary white tiles are likely replacements as well. Here are some MCM entryways that are a more true to the design of that era. To emulate these, you'll want to consider installing some veritcal dividers on top of the pony wall or instead of the pony wall. Change out the railing, and put back simple slab sliding doors on the closet. Please also consider getting a new door that has some glass so that you have some natural light coming through, or, at the bare minimum, paint the door (inside and out) a bright cheerful color. Maybe one that you can use as an accent color other places in your home. A slate floor entryway was very common in homes of this era. It might be worth a consultation with an architect that specializes in restoring MCM homes. You may have some other alterations that were done to your home over time, and if you can restore it, it will probably greatly increase the value of your home. And if you're an MCM lover, it's just the right thing to do. Well, I managed to build an entryway table this weekend...so there's no going back now - no more couch on the wall! Oh and those unsightly sidelight curtains found their final resting place in the trash too. Whoever came up with these window films is genius! Thinking maybe chalk painting the table, sanding a few edges to expose the wood and some storage baskets below for blankets and such.

First of all, I’ve been toying with the idea of adding a vestibule to the front of my home, so this project of yours is very intriguing to me! Moving on, since the current tiled entryway area is part of the room with the hardwood, replace that tile with the same wood. As for the vestibule flooring, will there be a door and/or significant change in elevation (i.e., a step) between the vestibule and the rest of the entry? If so, you could use tile in the vestibule. Would I recommend using the tile you’re thinking about using? Probably not, and for the very reason you’re concerned about—“that it would look like I tried to hard to get them to match.” But to know for sure, I’d really have to see the rest of your space and the plans for the vestibule, though my initial thought would be to use something completely different in shape, color and/or texture from the kitchen tile. For example, maybe use just those small hex tiles or perhaps use a charcoal/black tile. Btw, have you considered enlarging the opening to the kitchen?
