What engine to repower an older Snapper rear-engine riding mower?

Hey everybody. The engine on my Snapper 281011BE, 28" mower has died after many years of faithful service, and I'd like to get some information on what I can use to replace it. According to the internets, the mower was supposed to have a 10hp engine originally, but at some point someone replaced that with a 12hp motor. It's a Briggs and Stratton I/C motor. I've never really worked on a lawn mower before, but I'm pretty handy and I've worked on plenty of cars, so I'm confident I can pull off the work, but I don't know enough about small engines to know what I can drop in the dead motor's place. Do most B&S motors mount the same way, or do I need to track down an identical engine? Also, can I use a different brand engine in it's place? Where do I get all that info? Anyway, thanks to any and all who can help!!
