horrible black spot - what would you do?
Comments (4)I am tempted to just weed-wack the whole bed down to 6" and then keep it clear from there to see if it helps? I am so upset - I think I am loosing my iris! ==>>> liquifying.. a diseased plant.. and spreading the spores all over the entirity might not be the best idea.. dont you think .. easy.. but not best .. when is the last time you thinned the heard.. and opened it all up for air flow??? improving the soil.. and just cleaned up the whole mess??? iris.. unlike a lot of perennials.. are not a plant and forget it forever type plant ... [some of the older ones are .. but not all] if you decide to do something.. do it right.. not easy ... one might suggest you take an small isolated area.. dig it all .. cut the leaves back.. replant about half of each of what you take out .. i dont know if bleaching or something might help ... and see if that area recovers enough.. to invest in doing the rest ... with this years weird heatwave.. in march in MI [whats that all about .. 80 plus degrees] .. and repeated frosts and FREEZES ... the iris are not having a peak year .. and the leaves look horrible.. you might want to post a pic.. and let these sperts .. actually see what is going on ... ken...See MoreDo you think black shutters and a bright red door would work here
Comments (12)My house looks so much like yours except that it has two dormers. It has been white with dark green shutters and trim with a mahogany front door with a large oval glass and sidelights for 15 years since we built it. The roof has been green also. We love it but are ready for a change. It needs a new roof(after tennis ball size hail) so we are thinking of black trim/black shutters and a grey roof. My husband wants grey trim/black shutters but the pictures online of houses all have white trim/black shutters.I would love a red door but he likes the mahogany door. Could we paint the wood around the door and sidelights red?...See MoreHow do you think these doors would look painted black?
Comments (31)For the record...I don't mean to be offensive when I offend...and with that in mind, I'm going to now offend (sorry) I have strong opinions on a few things, and one of them is centered around woodwork in a home. Trim and doors should not have great contrast. A little is ok, but a huge contrast (ie black and white) looks to me like you couldn't afford to do all of your trim the right color. Especially in a room like yours Reno, that is full of beautiful white. Now frankly I don't like white trim either :oP But I definately think it looks terrible with black doors. The green in a very soft shade is lovely because it's not such a big contrast, but in looking at that pretty bedroom, the only thing that screams WRONG to me is that they forgot to paint either the door or the trim because they don't go together. IF you think I'm full of hog wash (and I often am) then consider doing a tint de nigre' which is a mix of black and brown. It's more "wood like" so not as stark a mix, and I think it's great with the type of rich colors you like. My whole house is done in it: (The door needs another coat of paint....but you get the idea): And yes...those picture frames are empty. I'm working on it!!!...See MoreIf you have a Ton of home-made compost, like I do, what would you do?
Comments (21)I don't have real compost but I do have leaf mulch that has really broken down over the couple of years it has been in a windrow out in my back yard. The town brought me 8 large trucks ( approximately 200 - 250 cubic yards) that had been vacuumed out of the gutters. I use it as mulch every time I plant something new in my gardens about 6-8" deep and my soil is easy to plant into now and the weeds are few and far between and easy to pull because they are only rooted in loose mulch. I like it so much that I'll probably e-mail the Superintendent of Public Works about November and ask for about 5 more truckloads to replace what I've used. I almost feel guilty about how easy it is....See Morerrah
