Home Decorating Design Dilemma Before & After

What is this architecture style or styles?

Really not sure what this style is. We’re considering buying this home, built in 1985, and the interior needs updating. My decorating style tends toward contemporary with mid-century elements. Just don’t want to veer too far off track if this home is meant to have a more traditional vibe.

it's traditional for sure. It has some elements of colonial revival.maybe some Dutch ones? but it's a mix. I think. A take on. I'd be very interested in other comments, since I'm just learning the basics of atchitectural styles

nothing mcm about it though. Not from I can see

I'd say: it's a nice house.

Thanks, yes- I was totally thinking a mix of those styles! I know it’s definitely not a mid-century or contemporary exterior but think the interior may lend itself to incorporating some of those elements.

Well to me it looks like an unadorned victorian Also, make sure to follow the Chicago Bungalow Association on email or FB - while you can't sign up to have your house certified, they share loads of helpful info for any vintage home. Super helpful and lots of local resources.

IMO you do the interior to whatever style you like ad forget the exterior for the moment since interior remodelling often has changes to the exterior like window placement. I do not think interiors need to match exteriors in style . As for classic I would need to see what you think is calssic. I have a MCM ranch that is a classic and I happen to love MCM so my interior tends to be similar. My last house was cute 1 1/2 storey built in 1905 really nice outside awful inside so we did a very contemporay interior but honeored the original molding and ceiling and loved that house . Do waht you love on the inside then come back when all that work is done and get help with the exterior.

Foursquares were built around the turn of the 20th c. and into the 1930s and by then shutters would have had no functional value and would have been considered "old-fashioned" more than anything else, on a functional style like this. And since your house has double windows and the shutters clearly would not close over the windows, it lessens their decorative appeal too. I have nothing against obviously decorative shutters on houses from the 1950s and such when they started putting them on as pure decoration even though they made no functional sense. But I feel like foursquares with double windows tend to look better without.

While the house is a traditional mix, there is nothing about the exterior that is bossy and should dictate your interior decoration scheme. MCM and contemporary sound like a perfect combination of styles for that house.

I see the cape cod style influence in the dormers and bow window, would not say mcm or contemporary

It is a nice proportional house that does not thankfully have the current unfortunate almost-required snout-nose garage or garage in front taking up half the front. Nice old trees too. I think you can do a lot with it.
