Panic time! Why did this branch fall off my huge oak?
Comments (13)Thanks Resin, I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed. While I'm here, could I get an option or 2? Knowing that this is a Water Oak and nearing the end of its life cycle, what precautions should I take? I have it professionally trimmed every other year. Crown cleaned & dead limbs removed. I would do it every year but it's very expensive, $800 and up because of the tight space. I have it fertilized with the deep injection thing every few years, try to keep the caterpillars at bay as best we can. I'm really more afraid of it falling on a neighbor's house than anything else, one in particular complains about it constantly although I keep it trimmed about 10 feet above what the city requires. I'm guessing it's about 60 years old, have read that it lives 60 to 80 years. The arborist I use is the best respected in the city and he says just watch it and see. He says for liability reasons he can't guarantee the health of it. (SO why is he an arborist if he can't tell me that?) Anyway, thanks for any advice....See MoreLeaves falling off Valencia branch
Comments (1)I have a Valencia, Late Lane, Owarwi Satsuma, and Washinton Navel in pots in San Jose. You are probably giving your Valencia either too much or too little water and/or fertilizer. Here is how I keep mine healthy: 1) Use commercial potting soil for the size of pot that you use (I think it might be sandier for big pots to help them drain), 2) Drill at least 5 drainage holes (minimum 3/4" diameter)in the bottom of the pot and cover them with fiberglass screen (not too fine) sold for this purpose before adding the soil, 3) Use ONLY organic, low-potency fertilizer. You could be burning the leaves with chemical fertilizers and ironite, 4) Water a medium sized pot with at least 4 gallons of water once a week in winter and twice a week in summer (this is highly dependent on the temperature). Don't worry about over-watering if you have good drainage and soil as I have described above, 5) Use ladybugs to control aphids and keep ants out of the trees, and 6) Repot to a larger pot every 2-3 years if the tree has grown but now appears to be struggling, and 7) give the trees the maximum amount of sunlight. Good luck!...See MoreSmall new branches and new leafs falling off
Comments (5)It was planted this past spring in the ground. I have mostly red clay and sand soil here and drainage isn't super good but okay. There is slight slope for excess water to drain off so the roots don't stay saturated. When I planted it I mixed up the top couple inches with more sand and raised the planting area a couple inches higher than the surrounding area. Then a inch layer of home made compost topped with a couple inches of pine bark mulch. The root system seems fine. When I fertilized it a few weeks ago I pulled back the mulch to take a look and the roots were just below the mulch and spreading in all directions, nice and white too! I watered it once a week in the summer with a hose slowly for 20 min or so. Now that's it's cooled off every 2 weeks unless it rains. Here is a pic of a couple small branches that fell a few days ago. They were green when they fell but have started do dry up as you can see in the pic. They are only a couple inches long. This is we're they actually feel from on the tree Some new growth that decided to stay on Tips of the new growth. On one pic you can see where the new leafs aborted or just dried up? I assume navels are rather slow growing? Not as much growth as I am seeing on my satsuma, Meyer or rio red?...See MoreHelp Pls! Tomato branches falling off
Comments (17)Hey all - thanks for the replies. @thetexaswingnut - those useful posts were from me to you... the additional pictures of the plant and watering schedule - hoping they would help everyone potentially come up with the diagnosis. Any thoughts from you side? @seysonn - thanks for that. I did a neem spray over the weekend - hoping for the best. will probably give it another round this weekend. I'm using 10ml of Neem oil in 1000 ML of water. Sound right? @labradors - the marigolds died despite the watering. VERY odd. Was actually wondering if whatever got to the Marigolds is what got to the cucumbers of they just didnt like being transplanted there (they're a week old into the pot with the tomato). Fungus gnatts... ekh.. ya.. those sticky strips have helped. Just got some BT and hoping that helps as well. Could the larvae chewing on the roots have had a negative effect on the tomatos? Totally lost... and hoping for the best. Any ideas one what can turn these leaves necrotic and cause the branches to just drop would be greatly appreciated....See Moregreatpaul
