Butterfly Garden

Monarch caterpillars

Have a small herd of monarch cats, but they're eating themselves out of food. The milkweed they're on is just about stripped to naked stems. I'm in Lakeland, Fl. Anyone near by who has enuf milkweed to transfer these to?

If you haven't done so already, perhaps sign up for the NextDoor app (or any other app that connects you to your local area/neighborhood) and post your inquiry there. We recently had a 'neighbor' ~ 2 miles away who posted an SOS for Dutchman's pipe vines for her swallowtails, and she received a number of replies. Good luck!

I had six big caterpillars yesterday morning, and only two left when I checked again this morning. I saw this site, and then went back out to look around the area. I found two of the missing cats in a potted tomato plant two feet away from the milkweed stand. One was resting on a horizontal wire of the tomato cage and the other was hanging upside down on a small internal branch curled up and looking just about ready to start forming its chrysalis. Both were about a foot off of the ground level of the pot. They were hard to spot though. From Dallas, Texas.

It takes about 3 weeks from caterpillar to butterfly. You have time. Watch it and be entertained. You really have no control.
