Lantana - what's wrong?

Our weather has been extremely hot and dry. The lantanas all look terrible at a community garden where I do volunteer work. They may simply need additional water.

Last year we had lantana lace bug at the community garden & a nursery guy told us to cut them all down until no leaves remained. We did that on most but left a few leaves on others that we sprayed with neem oil. They looked much better by fall. Lantana is perennial in my climate.

I don’t see any bugs but I’ve read the lantana leaf miner post & see that leaf miners live inside the leaf, right? Can anyone tell me what’s wrong & what to do? I have neem oil that I can use. Thanks!

They're short of water. The bigger question is why. Some of the possible reasons: Too wet; Too dry; Excessive heat; Excessively low humidity; and/or Damaged root system from tilling or ?

Temporary shade might help.

Thanks, Jean! Too dry; Excessive heat in our area. 2 recent thunderstorms so I'm hopeful & I'll forget about treating for bugs. Appreciate your help.

'Vigoro' is the company name, not the name of a specific type of lantana. Yes, Lantana is a perennial, but a tender one. It behaves like an annual in much of the country though should come back from the roots where you are. The top will die back after a heavy frost. You'll just have to wait to see what color it is. That's totally unacceptable, in my opinion. Attached is the contact information. WANTED: Lantana trifolia, aka popcorn lantana

It's a very interesting plant indeed, but has been very hard to find. Recently in my search I saw a picture of a white flowered Lantana trifolia. The purple from the seeds/berries went wonderfully with the white flowers. Biggest problem I'm having with online and postal catalogs is they usually have a minimum purchase requirement of around $40... that's a lot of money when all I need is one clipping.

I totally forgot to update this thread! In the end, I went out in the middle of the night and found 3 well-fed caterpillars chomping away at the lantana. So it was as I had expected. I hand picked the caterpillars and moved them to a nasty's neighbor's front yard. Then I bought some thuricide to get rid of any that I didn't find that night. Things have been good since. I do hope they weren't Monarchs :( There's a ton of moths in the ivy next to my lantana. So I suspect it was all moth caterpillars.

I've been successful rooting lantana cuttings in the fall. Early fall, I had to cut them back the end of Aug into early Sept when they way overgrew their area. They rooted very quickly. I don't think mine aren't awake yet.
