Feedback needed on new bed for guest room/DS's room
Comments (35)With weighing everyone's input, I'm now thinking maybe I should just go ahead with a room update that would satisfy both his needs for part time use of the room over the college years plus my need for a guest room. Another factor driving the update sooner rather than later, is I know we will have several guests coming in May, both for DS's graduation and my DH's 50th birthday and the closer it gets to May, the busier I will get with party planning. There will be an opportunity in February to paint while he is away for 3-days at a tournament, then when he returns it is winter break so he would have some time to help me put his room back together and be part of the changes. That way, he will be included in the plans. He is away right now until Friday at a retreat so I haven't had a chance yet to run my ideas by him, but I will when he gets back. Main issue with the mahogany bed is it doesn't really go well with his existing furniture so I've been thinking about what I can/should add to make it look more cohesive without breaking the bank. Once he is out of school I don't think he will need such a large desk and hutch plus I do own another very similar one in DD1's room and DD2 has a smaller vintage kneehole desk which I really like as it has great storage space without a lot of room. Offhand, I have a single mahogany nightstand which I can replace his with: I'm now thinking perhaps I should just replace his desk/hutch will a smaller vintage kneehole type one so that he would have a place to work on his laptop when he is staying with us. When searching for DD2 last year I found a lot and here is one listed on CL for only $50: What do you think? While these pieces may not be his first choice for his room, I feel it would allow for more growth during the transition of this room into serving dual functions over the next several years. Long term, my mom has promised to give me my grandmother's mahogany secretary and I can see that working well at some future point when DS no longer lives with us and most likely would replace the desk. As for paint, I was thinking a soft grey or pale blue. He is very fond of blue, but I find these walls too dark. I can get him a blue comforter and keep the present rug for now; then get another set of bedding to use when guests visit....See MoreHelp me create a pretty sitting room by day and guest oasis by night.
Comments (44)Bpathome, the rods separate from the middle (because they are expandable) so I slip off the curtains and neatly fold them, and store them with my linens and lay the rods along the drawer edge when they are not in use. I have a handheld laundry steamer, so when I want to pop them back on, I just give them a quick steam to look neatly pressed. The only sign of them when not in use, is a small (postage stamp size) magnet square that I permanently adhered to the doors top corners (because my doors are not metal). But I painted them white and they lay almost flush to the door (less than 1/8 thick) so they really do just blend right into the door....See MoreIs a 10x11 room too small for a queen bed?
Comments (8)A queen bed mattress is 60 inches wide 80 inches long. If the bed goes on the ten foot wall? You will have 30 inches on either side for bed side tables, and 52 inches from the foot of the bed to the opposite wall,......minus the depth of the dresser ( 20 inches ) leaving you 32 inches to walk and open drawers . If it goes on the eleven foot wall you will have 36 inches for side tables, and 40 inches to the wall and 20 to open drawers and pass by: ) It's.....................MATH. Keep the headboard sleek an upholstered, skip a foot board if possible Obviously, I don't know where the closet is, nor any other passage. Make a drawing. Take a picture. Avoid a double. Two people in a double are sleeping in less than crib space, ( 27 inches each ) Which is what happens when two folks share a queen. Each has a long "crib", 30 inches wide. They will be sleeping. Get the queen........No CLUTTER . Best mattress you can afford, good sheets. an assortment of bed pillow, and layers for warmth or less warmth. Good lighting at bed side. CLEAN... no junk in the closet.....no extra anything that doesn't go to the comfort of the guest....See MoreHelp me turn this 1980's office into a guest room/ pool changing space
Comments (6)That's a nice built in bookcase. Don't paint it just yet- but for sure clean it up and declutter it. Part of the reason it's driving you nuts is that you have been collecting junk instead of being organized, and it shows. Once it's cleaned up- plan on a couple of those sections being dedicated to guest goodies- towels, toiletries, ect. You don't need to replace the floor just yet either- but yes, a nice big rug will help that floor out a lot. Are you planning on keeping the desk area in there too, or is that being moved out? If you are keeping the office stuff, then a nice convertible couch/sleeper sofa will probably work better than a regular bed or a daybed. There's a pretty good array of sofas out there now, here's a couple links of them (and some daybeds too!) https://www.housebeautiful.com/shopping/furniture/g28552235/sleeper-sofas-for-small-spaces/ https://nymag.com/strategist/article/best-sleeper-sofas-pull-out-couches.html How often do you have guests sleep over vs needing the area for folks to change for the pool? If you want that room to serve for changing, then you will need to do something waterproof for the floor- take out the office stuff and a more casual daybed scenario might be best. If you have guests sleep over on the regular, then do consider making that a fully dedicated bedroom space with a real bed- no changing room or office action if you go this route....See Morelilsophie
