two-sided kitchen island with interior pony wall

Any advice would be welcome. Our kitchen designer wants us to put a pony wall down the middle of the the island. The doors and drawer fronts face away from each other toward the perimeter cabinetry. The builder wants to just cut holes for the electrical and plumbing in the (expensive) cabinets and run the wiring up the inside, which we don't want. We prefer the designer's plan as it seems to mean fewer holes in the cabinetry and wiring out of sight. The builder says it makes the cabinet install harder but we can't see why. You still have to make sure everything lines up properly on the door sides and tops of the cabinets whether there's extra framing in the middle or not. Does anyone have any advice?
