Gray Kitchen Island / floor color / backsplash suggestions
Comments (0)We are renovating our kitchen -- it will be a u shaped kitchen (quite large - about 20 x 15) with a large island in the middle. I'm going to do white cabinets on the perimeter and all countertops in a granite that looks very similar to marble (light gray with darker gray veins called "white vermont"). I will have hardwood floors, which I'll probably do in medium walnut color (i can't do a very dark brown brown because the rest of my house has lighter floors, but i can pick the stain). Would love to get thoughts on the following (and thank you in advance!): 1. I want to set off the island cabinetry in a different color so it's not too sterile and was thinking of doing gray. should I do a very dark charcoal gray (like BM Anchor Gray or Iron Mountain) or a medium gray (like BM Trout Gray or Steel wool)? My concern is how this gray color will blend with the medium walnut brown floor color and stand out against the white cabinetry....and i'm not seeing a lot about painted gray cabinetry. Any thoughts/concerns with this floor/island color combo generally and any paint color suggestions? 2. I think I'm going to run the granite up the wall as backsplash. I will have a hearth area with a white wooden hood blending with the cabinetry and i may do a recessed shelf on this wall -- do you think it will be too monotonous to use the same granite also behind the stove within the hearth area, or should i use a different stone? Thanks for your thoughts - i'm getting a little overwhelmed thinking about all these details!...See Morewhen to install floor, backsplash and countertop??
Comments (6)We did tile floor, then cabinets, then countertop...still waiting to put in a backsplash. If you put the flooring in first, then it goes under the cabinets, making it easier to change things later. While the product cost might be somewhat higher (the cost of the materials under the cabinets), installation will be less b/c there are far less cuts, etc. Additionally, everything is at the same level for installation...cabinets & appliances. Whatever you do, be sure the flooring materials are even & level across the entire room. If you do not put your flooring material under the cabinets, then at least put plywood under the cabinets & appliances to bring them up to your planned finished floor height. This is to (1) ensure appliances will fit, (2) make it easier to install/remove appliances (no having to raise/lower them to get them in/out), and (3) avoid the "surprise" when your toekicks end up being shorter than normal as well as lowering your counter height. (If you want a lower counter height then plan for it, don't "end up" with it b/c of an "oops!") I also suggest you run the finished floor under your appliance alcoves a least a few inches so there's no raw plywood visible when looking from across the room. This includes refrigerators, DWs, ranges, etc. ...anything that sits directly on the floor. Oh, and don't install the final quarter round or furniture molding until your floor has been installed...this way the molding will hide any uneven/rough edges....See MoreBacksplash or no backsplash
Comments (20)So tired of hearing " but that will make it look dated" or "it wouldn't be good for resale" Everything is going to be dated at some point, the kitchen designers, cabinet companies and appliance companies make sure of that. Example: stainless steel appliances were just coming on the market 15 years ago when we gutted our kitchen for a remodel. It was hard for me to find stainless in my area at that time, I live in a small mid western town. So, have you noticed in the past few years appliance companies have been trying to bring out new colors, grayed looking stainless, now ice white etc. they are trying to make people think their stainless appliances are soon going to be "dated". But I have read in several articles that stainless is still the number one choice. I chose a cinnamon stained cherry wood for our new build. I thought about white because that is the trend right now, but I reasoned cherry cabinets will always be in style while the white trend Has just a few more years. I won't be a slave to trends. Just my opinion....See MoreShow me your light gray backsplash!!
Comments (11)Ikea Adel (now Grimslov) white with Home Depot marble tiles. They appear very white in the box, with little to no pattern. Once they were on the wall, on the gray mastic/thinset, the patterns tended to show through more. These tiles were remarkably inexpensive at $5.69 sq ft. I installed them with the help of a friend. The first photos were taken before the caulk was installed. Here are some photos....See MoreRelated Professionals
