No such thing as soundproof glass doors. Even if there were, the walls and ceiling surrounding them would have to be completely rebuilt to different standards too. Because that is a major route of the sound transmission of not the room.

Depends on the type of noise. Typically, you can spec a door with offset glazing or laminated glass to get better performance out of the IGU.

As Sophie said, nothing is "soundproof", just more sound resistant that the existing unit.

What does the wall construction consist of?

Wood and stucco.

I don't mean fully soundproof, but I want to be able block out animal noises such as loud birds or a barking dog and muffle traffic noises.

I'm neither an architect nor an acoustical engineer, but from what I've seen done in production studios, I don't think you're going to get much sound transmission resistance from a single layer of glass that's openable. The studio windows I've seen have been two panes of heavy glass, separated by at least 10-12" of air space, and placed so that the panes aren't parallel. Typically one glass layer will slope inward, and the other outward.

I doubt that you can do anything similar in a standard residential studwall.

However, you might be able to build some kind of interior or exterior box structure that would allow for framing a second door. Sealing (gasketing) and caulking would be really important for both doors; sound will leak through even the smallest gap.

You may well be an exception, but most people can adjust to birds and other nature sounds. Some actually enjoy them. :)

Traffic is a different problem. I think it's getting worse. Newer vehicles actually seem noisier (exhaust) than older ones. Even with all my windows closed, I always know when my neighbor gets home if I'm on that side of the house. :(

Off topic remark: I think if I were building a house today, and I had only myself to please, I'd consider building an earth-sheltered or even fully underground home. Now that's soundproofing.

First you have to select the type of door you want. Here are your options.

The current sliding doors are less than 20 years old, so I assume they are double paned minimum code builder grade for that year. If it will make a very significant difference in keeping out bird noise, I'd go for triple paned glass doors. I'll also redo the drywall with quiet rock or similar drywall designed to block noise coming through the walls.

There is a bird somewhere nearby that does very annoying squawking noises at around 5 am every morning. That's really the only noise that happens regularly enough to be a real issue. Blocking out other noises like occasional barking dogs will be a nice bonus.

You have unrealistic expectations. Wear $1 earplugs.

Or buy a parrot. Won't be long until you have trained yourself to block out bird noise.

But your zero lot line neighbors probably won't like it. :-)

Impact glass doors do cut down the noise level considerably, although they don't totally eliminate it. I live facing a noisy beach road with old sliders facing the road. Neighbors have replaced theirs with impact and the noise difference is extraordinary. However, the husband who is sensitive to noise still feels the need to wear earplugs to sleep.

Look at Miami-Dade compliant impact doors. I can't even hear people on my lanai when the slider doors are closed.

No. Earplugs are not a solution. Then you can't hear anything. Phone, doorbell, alarm clock etc..

How is it unrealistic to be able to block out noises that aren't super loud?

It's not like there is a rocket blasting outside my window or even a neighbor shaking the walls with deep bass from their stereo.

It's just a bird. It shouldn't be that difficult insulate that noise out!

Are impact doors not available in your area? They reduce noise quite well.

I could look, but they are likely only sold in hurricane or tornado zones.

I'm sure you could get them, but the issue would be finding qualified installers.

If you already have a double pane door, the problem may not be the door. Before going into expense of adding another layer of drywall to the walls and ceiling and replacing the door, I would check other things. Like bathroom exhaust fan ducting...is it insulated? HVAC ducts. Plumbing vents. Gaskets on all the exterior wall switches & receptacles as well as ceiling lights. Recessed light cans? Pull a piece of door/ window trim and check that the space between the jamb and framing is insulated.

There are many ways that sound travels into your home not just the windows.You can get triple paned sliding doors that would make a difference for the doors. If a burgler wants into your house the doors will not stop them whether french or patio.
