Tyler & Chamblee info please
Comments (5)Hi - Tyler has loads of fun things! Esp. this time of year. And the Azalea Trail is going on now - do search for "Tyler Azalea Trail" and it will show you photos of what things look like now. Blue Moon Gardens is a must see [plants, roses, display gardens, gift shop]....the town of Edom is charming [good resturant there], and you can do Hand Nursery on the way. The Municipal Rose Garden is probably not in bloom now but there will be so much other fun stuff you will have a full day. Hand Nursery Blue Moon Gardens town of Edom To get to Hand Nursery and Blue Moon.......you get on the Loop and go to Hwy. 64 [this is also the road to Canton, the once a month flea market fest!!] - coming from Chamblees, you will turn right. I cant remember how many miles - 6-8 - but Hand Nursery will be on the right [it is sort of down a little hill, elevation wise, and you can see 3 big greenhouses]. David Austin Roses office is on the left hand side, right before you get to Hand's. [order first, then pick up there, no display gardens, no walk ins]. Then right up from Hand Nursery, you will see a sign that says "Edom" on the right. Turn left there [only one road, so easy to see]. Go about 6 miles and Blue Moon Gardens is on the left. Fabulous display gardens and every unusual plant you can imagine and a fabulous gift shop in a cute cute redone farmhouse. Then.......go on in to the little town of Edom - cute place to eat, Potters Brown with beautiful handmade pottery and other cute things.....The icing on the cake is Mercados Mexican Resturant, on the Loop. Divine! The Arbor Gate near Conroe is having Rose Day March 28, the Houston Rose Society rose show is April 18, their garden tour is April 19......with you living that close, you really should join - $12/year for gazette and you get 10% off at several nurseries including Teas, and for Rose Week in February at Southwest Fertilizer [where I get my Mills Magic Rose Mix] it is 15% off. Oh, almost forgot Jordan's Plant Farm and the cute wholesale nurseries in New Summerfield.....this is off Hwy. 69 right at Jacksonville. Jordans has a fantastic gift shop and beautiful plants. If you need directions, let me know. Judith...See MoreSuggestions for good roses for the Austin, TX area
Comments (29)I used to live in Georgetown so know how hot it gets. I think Mike's suggestion of arbors is excellent. You could also consider a couple of crepe myrtle trees - White Natchez crepe myrtle is a tree that can take alot of punishment and survive well and bloom in the summer. The Natchez has a really pretty arching form and can give some height and interest to the wall and perhaps a bit of shade to the roses. In back of my horse barn in an area with all day hot sun, I have crepe myrtles and old garden roses [Maman Cochet, Mrs. BR Cant, Mon. Tillier, Mme. Berkeley, Georgetown Tea] planted together - the effect is beautiful. I have differing colors of the crepe myrtles - lavender [here is where you could include your lavender color], hot pink, light pink, white, red - really is striking in the hot summer when the roses are resting. I have also found that it really is true that mulching is important. I mulch my roses with horse compost then topdress with wood mulch from Home Depot. The roses thrive - the ones I didnt mulch dont look nearly as good. My suggestion would be to plant old garden roses first - and I also highly recommend the Antique Rose Emporium and Chamblees. I was just at ARE - bought several of the Pioneer roses that are supposed to be really tough. Also, I would like to recommend the Buck roses. Carefree Beauty is a good one. There are many other good ones - Eutin is a red that has literally hundreds of buds on it - really an eyecatcher. The noisettes - and I adore Crepuscule! - are very hardy. The ARE had a store in San Antonio, now closed, but I would call P.K. at the Independence store - tell her your growing conditions, and let her recommend. Get their color catalog and look that over. I think the really important thing for first year roses is to mulch and water. I did that with my above mentioned bed - now I never water them and they are fabulous. If you dont have much experience with roses, you will succeed with the old gardens - then branch out to the hybrid teas if you like. If you built an arbor, you might have some luck growing a couple of the Austin roses under it where they can get a bit of shade. A couple of tough reds are Cadenza and Cameron Bohls. I have both and love them. Dont forget about the Lady Banksia rose - both white and creamy yellow. They are marvelous in the spring. New Dawn should do well also. From what I recall of soil in your area - be sure and dig a big hole and incorporate good soil with the native soil. I have also heard - bought some, going to try it next time I plant - that a cupful of shale, which holds then releases water, is good to put in the hole of roses growing in dry hot areas. Good luck! Love the limestone on your house.......See MoreCertified Roses- ‘Perfume Breeze’
Comments (28)This will be my first time since Mark Chamblee closed the original nursery. I will miss Mark's prices and especially the sale bin, where he had all kinds of roses for just $5 ! Oh, those were the days!! Gone forever........I want Princess Charlene de Monaco - photos look gorgeous! I understand the Chamblees people [I have met the daughter who bought it with her father, she is very nice] will be bringing in newer roses. Their 3 gallon David Austins are prohibitive - $65! And the 1 gallons that Mark priced at $12 they have for $22. Well, I am just glad Chamblees is still in business and I can go there to get roses......The only reason I wouldnt get to go is if my daughter in law needs me to pick up my grandson earlier........cant wait! It will be awhile before my Moonlight in Paris blooms but if I see one at the big flea market in Canton tomorrow, I will photo [and buy!] it. Would like to have another.......I did see some nice roses in big pots at another nursery up by Tyler last week when a friend and I did a road trip - $18! I should have gotten one, all leafed out.........There is a birdbath at another nursery nearby that I really need........but I digress!! Cant forget to pick up my grandson with all these nurseries to see!...See More2019 Roses Unlimited Sale (June 3 - 19)
Comments (96)Another fun comparison: Left: RU, Distant Thunder, Own Root, I’ve had it about 1 month. This plant had the thinnest stems of the three, also had smaller root ball than the K&M. Very healthy, put out a lot of new growth Middle: Wayside, Molineaux, Bare Root, Dr Huey, also had it about a month. By far the thickest stems, but of course being bare root had to grow new feeder roots. Good progress, there’s even a bud. Right: K&M, Buxom Beauty ,Fortuniana, just arrived today. Thicker stems than the RU rose, also had a very dense rootball. Was trimmed short significantly to fit in packing box so most of the mature foliage is gone, but lots of new growth remains, even 2 buds. I’m very happy with all three providers, and thankful that I’m able to get hard-to-find varities in mid summer in great health!...See MoreDingo2001 - Z5 Chicagoland
