Anderson 100 vs Milgard aluminum black exterior/black interior

We are considering black exterior/black interior casement windows and looking at Anderson 100 and Milgard aluminum. Aesthetics aside, we know they are different materials and cost seems similar with Anderson 100 a little more expensive, what are the pros and cons of each? Milgard casement operation is pushout, whereas Anderson 100 operation is crank. Anderson 100 has better performance numbers. We were going to go with Milgard but Anderson 100 seems like a better choice for a bit more money. What do you think? Thanks!

I think you have pretty well summarized the differences so far. The 100 will get the nod in terms of thermal performance and the thermally broken aluminum is a proven material. The Milgard will give you the more industrial loft feel, but not by much.

I don't think you would go wrong with either provided your climate is okay for aluminum. If it is, its a great and proven material.

Thanks for the comment. I guess that is why we are having a difficult time deciding. Are you suggesting that the aluminum windows will be potentially more trouble free and last longer?

We have a related question. Neither Anderson 100 or Milgard aluminum have french patio doors, only sliding patio doors. Would Anderson 400 or Milgard Ultra french patio doors look good with the black windows? Are there other french patio doors we can look at? Thanks!

If you're in a desert type climate I'd go with Andersen. When you go with dark colors on vinyl and are in a hot climate there is a higher likely hood of having some warping and paint failure. They can say lifetime warranty but they determine what lifetime is. They could say the lifetime warranty of the product is 10 years. So you and your husband's concerns I think are correct. That and I think the Andersen window looks better...

We were also wanting windows with black interiors and exteriors. For us the local availability brought it down to a choice between Pella or Milgard fiberglass windows. The Pella offerings were somewhat pricier, and we could never quite understand the why of it. We wound up selecting Milgard Ultra, and we're happy with the end results. And Milgard's warranty was fantastic, as our landscaper accidentally hit one window with a stone and chipped it, but Milgard replaced the insert without so much as a blink. One factor is whether a particular manufacturer's black is acceptable to you. Milgard's is called Black Bean, which is a bit lighter than true black, and I fussed over this for quite a while. Pella's may have been very slightly blacker, but also not true black. Now that we can see the final product in place, it looks fine. Good luck on your project. Brian

I live in the Hamptons and my husband is a premier build, building multi-million dollar homes. His father was and my father were both GC's. All 3 would prefer installing an Andersen every time over the window architects spec. today. If there isn't an issue with the cost, lead time, install issues or the functionality, there is usually some sort of issue that ensues not too many years down the road. The look is important, I get it, but functionality rules. Here in East Hampton, NY the local color use Andersen on their homes. Hands down the favorite.

Thanks millworkman - I will bring both quotes to another place and see if I can reconcile the difference. Or perhaps the Marvin one includes something the Andersen one doesn't? WoW - U factor is from the city, state, and architect (SoCal is, let's just say, energy conscious). I'm not sure if that's something that can be adjusted by the architect? I'm assuming it's calculated based on number of fenestrations and size? That's the hang up, though, as the all-aluminum windows struggle to meet that, as far as my (and lc's) research seems to indicate. I think I have it down to Kolbe (can't figure out the difference between Ultra and Vistalux as both seem to be aluminum clad but maybe it's just a design thing, traditional vs modern), Marvin Ultimate (aluminum clad), Andersen E (aluminum clad) or Fleetwood (all aluminum but $$$$!). Will look at the Milgard all aluminum because it exists but I feel like it won't meet up to the quality I'm hoping to get. Just being able to list a few brands is somewhat reassuring but I'm not feeling that comfortable yet. Can't thank you all enough for your graciousness with your time and knowledge.

They’re two totally different windows. If you are wanting something that looks a bit more wood-like, the Andersen 100 is the better choice. If you are wanting something a bit more industrial, with more glass and less frame, the Milgard aluminum fits the bill.

Personally, I really like the Andersen 100 casement and have had very few issues when we’ve installed them. I’m not a big fan of Milgard’s aluminum, but it gaining market share due to it being one of the few options for black.

Any thoughts about what French doors we should look at. Stay with either Anderson 400 or Milgard Ultra? Thanks
