How to build this murphy bed unit in guest room
Comments (7)There are numerous sites on-line for the hardware kits, most come with instructions for building your own. The kits range from about $250 to $400, depending on the lifting system (and who's selling). Lumber is additional. All things considered, I would recommend buying the parts rather than playing with diy engineering. Yes, you can use ready-made bookcases, but keep in mind that even unfinished ones are not inexpensive. You can also add your own doors to bookcases, to turn them into partial or total cabinets. The cases to either side of the bed should be slightly deeper than the folded bed, usually 12" to 15". I do recommend that they be attached to wall studs. The concealing cases can be any depth, but 9" to 12" will look good. I find a tracked sliding system easiest, and on one, I did add concealed roller casters because of the deep carpet. Yes, the casters do make it easier to move the cases. I also helped a friend make one, using panels instead of cases for the concealment. The advantage is a slight gain in floor space while the bed is concealed, and the disadvantage is the loss of the shelf space from using panels instead of cases. If you were to fill a 12" deep, 3'x 7' case with books, the total weight could easily be in excess of 500 lbs. The fewer books and art objets, the less weight, but even empty cases can be quite heavy. A double-sized mattress with spring will weigh less than 200 lbs, plus the moving assembly. We are not talking something you can pick up with one hand, so care must be taken to follow all directions carefully. Once assembled, the bed is indeed easily raised and lowered (two hands but little stress, lol)....See MoreNeed cheap but not too cheap sleeper sofa
Comments (3)What a shame to spend that kind of money when the couch won't get used either. We came to the same conclusion last year too. We decided not to get a sleeper sofa because even good ones don't have very comfortable beds and also because like you, we didn't really need a couch either. Instead we purchased a "high end" inflatable bed ($250) that can be stored in a closet. It is 2 1/2 feet high so it's easy to get in and out of and you can sit on the edge of it. It also has a remote control type gadget that can be used to adjust the amount of inflation for individual comfort. It's actually pretty comfortable. Anyway, it's something to think about....See MoreGuest Sleeper
Comments (32)chickory_flower: If budget is a concern then I think you can do well with Craigslist looking for a futon. I would recommend a wood frame, though, and perhaps buy a new mattress for it or if you can sew, you could make a new cover. The ones I had were cheapo metal--bought for just that purpose and I think that is why it was so uncomfortable as the metal bar poked through just like what happens with some sofabeds. I've noticed the wood futon frames have slats which may work better. The issue I think is because the mattress has to bend over there are no springs it it and so it tends to feel lumpy. Perhaps having an extra layer of the egg crate foam might help. teeda: The aeorbed twin is like having a sleeping bag. We were a group of 10 (2 families) traveling together. Then I would ask the hotel for extra sheets. My DS is the odd person out as the two girls can share a double bed and my DH and I the other. I like the flexibility of having a twin as it's easier to find an open spot to put it down. I'd rather have 2 twins than a double/queen. It comes attached with a plug in air pump that you use to inflate/deflate. It deflates very quickly, then you just fold lengthwise in thirds and roll up like a sleeping bag and then put in the little carrying case it comes with. Very quick and easy. I think it would be nice to have for slumber parties as well if you have kids. Then you can just set up an extra bed in your child's room for her friend. mustangs: The way it works is that you have a standard 3-4" thick sofa bed mattress adn attached to that is the air bed part. It comes with a pump which you plug in and inflate so that mattress then becomes a full 7-8" thick so you can fit standard sheets on it. While I didn't spend the night on it, I did lay down on it and it is very comfortable--like an aerobed raised up to bed height. The only thing is you have the added task to inflate/deflate daily. Reason I've not used it is because we don't have a rug in the living room and so opening/closing daily is a hassle. For some odd reason my DH's family prefers to sleep on the floor....See MoreReplacing Queen size bed with convertible sofa sleeper or wall bed
Comments (29)@Lisa - so you’re saying that like decoenthusiaste’s photos, but the sofa could be backed up to the foot of the bed barrier and the white table? @Angel- yes that’s the idea that the space would be living room by day- but with the floating sliding divider “wall” if someone wanted privacy during the day, they would just close off that space. But mostly the sliding doors would be open and it would act like a living room until it becomes a bedroom, basically at night. so yes decoenthusiaste’s idea does provide the bed to be basically tucked out of eyesight… “looks” like a living room most of the time. @decoenthusiaste, do you know where to purchase a divider like that? or probably east to construct I would think as it’s very simple. Thank you all for your ideas!! Trying to figure it out. Yes @Angel, apartment condo and Coop rules are just beyond what someone can imagine who isn’t familiar with it or knows someone who deals with it. Ahhhh...See MoreApril H
