Open Concept Living Room + Kitchen Design
We just purchased our first home and will be moving in soon. The walls are blue right now, and the ceilings are 20+ ft high, so we're going to hire a painter to repaint them a light tan color - though I'm open to suggestions for paint color, too! We have a couch, a love-seat, and a recliner we're definitely keeping, and a coffee table and two end tables we're considering replacing. The kitchen, dining area, and living room are all in one great room so I'd like for the decor and color scheme to flow well together or match entirely. There is no carpet downstairs so I'd like to put a cozy rug in the living room as we have friends over often and typically wind up sitting on the floor, playing games around the coffee table. I don't want to clutter the area with a bunch of furniture though so I'm torn between keeping our functional coffee table and end tables and opting for something smaller or nothing at all. I would love furniture placement ideas and rug resources. I've looked through a few well known websites for rugs, but haven't found one I like that wasn't over $600. I also need rugs for the kitchen that go well with the living room feel (so no chickens or Italian chefs lol). Suggestions for end tables and coffee tables (or ottomans) would be great, too! I know I sound like an idiot but obviously I am clueless as to this kind of stuff and wish my husband would just let me hire a decorator lol! However, he just now gave me another big fat NO to hiring one lol! Comments (27)Consider moving the fish tank and cabinet on which it sits to the left. Move the tv to the right and hang it on the wall just above a black, rectangle shaped, box shelf. Comments (1)Its hard to tell the depth/distance, especially from the wall the dog food is to the back of the sofa. I also feel like you could afford to back up the sofa bit more. Comments (3)If you want a TV in that room the only place it can really go is to the right of the fireplace (maybe to the left if you find that works better for you). It is never recommended to put it over the fireplace unless there is nowhere else for it to go. You have more than enough space on the right for a nice console. Maybe in the future you can do something more dramatic with the fireplace as it looks small in that large wall (or maybe you are already and it's not finished yet). Put a tall piece of art over it (something that is less wide than the fireplace). Face your sofa toward the fireplace and TV. The dining table should have the long side parallel to the slider. I can't imagine it fitting the other direction. I don't think it's a bad thing to have your old furniture in there for a while. It will help you get an idea of the right size for new pieces. You may also get better advice if you post a graph paper drawing of the space so the commenters know exactly how much space you're working with.
