I would like to move a toilet from one end of the bathroom to the opposite wall. Can you move a toilet if the drain has to be moved through joists.

It depends on the size of the joists, the spacing, and how much you would be cutting out of the joists.

I've done it (DIY) in two houses. The most recent one was on the first floor, so that was super easy to do from the basement. The previous one was on the second floor, so we had to take the flooring up. As the two previous posters said, the location of the waste stack in relation to where you want the new toilet to be is the main issue. If it's further away than it was before, it may need a new vent. And if the new drain pipe can't run between floor joists, but must go through them, it'll be a lot more difficult... you'll need to put the hole in the correct to-code location in the joist while keeping the correct to-code pitch in the pipe: tricky! If you're running in the same joist bay it'll be a lot easier! You should be able to tell which way your joists go from the basement.

Thanks for the input - it all helps. An eight inch wet wall would push the toilet into preventing the door from opening, so that's an issue. It would be moving closer to the drain vent that comes out the roof. It's a second floor, and the joists run the right way (if you draw a line from the old position three feet down the wall to the new position, it would not cross joists.) The floor below is 18 inches thick, like a plenum, but there is no telling exactly what space under there is taken and what is free. So either there's room underneath for the drain, or it might be a problem. I'm basically making the 5x7 room slightly larger, and switching the toilet with the sink. I prefer the toilet in the corner, so that the view from the soaking tub is more about the sink.

A couple of hundred to a couple of thousand. It depends on way too many factors such as the overall size of the bathroom and whether or not you actually have room in it to move the toilet over and still maintain the required clearances without making the bathroom itself larger, to whether you or on slab or joists, to which way the joists run, to the size of those joists..... Only way to tell is to do some preliminary measuring and diagnosis to see if it's even possible, and then call and get some plumbers in there to give you estimates.

All great advice. Yes, I will have a city inspector, but depending on which one I get, I will be more or less confident in their "inspection". (I have to be honest and say, with our addition, one of them was much more thorough than another--who didn't go into the crawlspace to inspect anything, for example). As for where in the span, it could go anywhere along the length of it, I believe. So wherever is best, we can do.

Is this on the first floor or is it the second or above?
If on the first floor, is it on a basement or crawl space?
If on the first floor over basement or crawlspace it's generally do-able.

If not on the first floor, you can sometimes run a pipe undernieth the joists and box in around the pipe so you have a bulkhead. This may - or may not -- look great from below depending on how it integrates into the room below.

In general, drilling through the joists is not an option.

It really depends on how far you are moving the toilet. Keep in mind that proper drainage for the drain pipe is going to require that the pipe be pitched 1/4" per 1' of run. So if you have to go more than a couple of feet keeping that pipe contained in the ceiling gets more difficult. It is certainly possible to move the toilet to your desired location but it may require a lot of other work. Best to consult with a plumber. good luck.

What size joists do you have? A waste line from a toilet can be 3" minimum, and you are not allowed to take more than 1/3 of the joist dimension. You also must maintain a 2" clearance from the edges of the top and bottom of the joist membranes. So if you have 2x10 joists, can reduce to 3" waste line, and start 2" from the top, you can travel 28 feet sideways before you get to within 2" of the bottom of your joists.

HOWEVER. You can't go nearly that far by plumbing code and maintain wet vent access. Only about 12 feet or so horizontally with a 3" line, depending on local code. If you don't understand wet vents then you will definitely need to have your plumbing evaluated by a plumber before you can make a decision.
