I would leave it for now and see how you like it after the kitchen is done. We were in a similar situation and I finally painted mine white after living with it for almost 18 years. I hated the color of the brick though, and I happen to like yours and think it will work well with the high gloss cabinets. Just so you can see, here is mine before and after. I'm with weedmeister on this one. You've got to ask yourself some questions, and discuss the implications with your builder. If that's an exterior wall, how to you plan to insulate it? Even if it's not, (I think it's a party wall,) consider it carefully. Stud construction is convenient for lots of reasons. Where are you going to run Romex and where are you putting electrical boxes? How are you going to anchor cabinets to masonry? ascorsonelli shows an example with a brick wall that was likely intended to be exposed. Yours might look charming now, but (no offense) it's not the finest brickwork. It was meant to be covered with lath and plaster. Sorry to rain on your parade ;) But sometimes what we think is a charming discovery turns into a tedious chore down the road. Ask yourself: what do you like about the brick? Maybe you can incorporate that (color/ texture/ whatever) into your scheme in a way that pleases you. That's just my two cents, having been through a lot of these dilemmas. It's easy to get carried away with an old house. I like your house in particular. I remember the cute butlers pantry! To me, your house has plenty of charm already, and I would make sure to weigh the consequences before committing to a potentially problematic exposed brick wall. Leave both the cabinets and the brick. Yours looks better than the picture with the white. If you are determined to do something with the brick, then, no solid color paint, use a paint wash, so it still looks like brick, not flat painted brick.

I wonder when natural brick and stone became a feature so disliked in the decorating world? Is it the Gaines effect? Pinterest? IG? All of the above? I mean, sure, throughout history people have painted masonry, but never to the extent as the last few years. It was something thoughtfully weighed and considered, usually due to bad brick quality … not a trend for any and all situations. Especially not with stone. Looking at real estate in my town, a large percentage of the houses have exterior and/or fireplace masonry painted over … and they look like badly done DIY projects. I’d never buy one. Reading old threads here, it was rare for anyone to suggest painting or limewashing masonry. Instead, the features were pretty much treated as background, and creatively integrated. I hope the tide turns, as there won’t be many houses left with interesting and natural features. Sorry to veer off, OP, just something that interests me. It is a discussion board, and I’m discussing. :)
