Cleaning Tips Windows

Window cleaning help!

Hi everyone,

I am trying to clean up this window but no matter what I try, I am unable to get rid of the streaks.
I can’t feel anything on either side of the glass. They are double pane windows.

Any thoughts? Advice?

Its how seal failure shows if the window is equip with Low-e in many cases. The moisture will react with the Low-e and oxidize in a manner that can appear streaky. See if you can ID who made the window and go about getting a warranty sash.

I had that problem with a mirror. I finally used the spray cleaner for computer monitors (mine was from Staples) and the smears finally came right off.

Make sure you are cleaning on cloudy days, not sunny. What products are you using?

I suspect that I could accurately describe the scratches that you are seeing in your glass without even seeing them personally... I suspect also that there isn't much that you can do since the windows are nine years old and the "cleaner" can simply claim that the scratches were already in the glass before he ever started. There are companies and systems that can remove scratches like that from glass - and they can make the window glass look virtually new again - but, typically they are not cheap and you have to be very careful choosing the correct method for removing the scratches since some systems actually make matters worse. There really isn't much that you can DIY to remove the scratches, unfortunately. There are some OTC glass buffing compounds that can remove really minor scratches, but your results when using them may not be satisfactory. Tempered glass will have a logo ("bug" in industry-speak) in a corner of the glass that will say "tempered". If the glass doesn't have the mark then it is not tempered glass. Sorry I couldn't offer more. If you are interested in contacting a professional scratch removal company - let me know and I can offer some advice in that area.

Denatured alcohol or rubbing alcohol should work. It works best with saturation so the longer you can keep the paint wet, the easier it will come off. It won't be easy though. You can also try a window scraper tool but be very careful with that as not to scratch the vinyl. Keep the blades fresh.

How old are they? It could be failed Low-e if they are equip with that type of coating.

They are at least 11 years old. We have tried windex, ammonia, etc. They are windows that are in a shaded area so no direct sunlight. And the one directly next to it does not look that way.
This is a rental so I wonder if the last people may have used some weird chemical to clean?

Damp microfiber cloth to wash and another to dry. Nothing else needed. That's all I ever use and no streaks even in sun.

Looks like it's failed double pane glass. It gets cloudy inside, between the pane...as millworkman says: seal failure. Only cure is to replace the glass.

I was wondering about the seal failure. My only question is why it’s a perfect streak. As if someone scratched it with something when wiping.
Is that how seal failure shows up???

Are you using white paper towels to wipe the windows? They will streak from the white dye used in them. That has happened to me. Try the tan colored natural towels.

I would suggest you to try regular toothpaste to clean your windows. Put some toothpaste on a microfiber cloth and rub it in a circular motion over the streaks. I hope this will give you good results.

Or call a local glass company for about $250 they will install a new pc of insulated glass. They will measure and install it. Or if your so inclined take the sash off, have them measure the glass at their shop, reinstall the sash, when the glass is in take it to them for the new glass, should be an hour or so of work. And your done!

You shouldn't need anything chemical beyond a little soap and water-- try using a microfiber cloth

Yes, you can a use chemical-free soap and lukewarm water as well for cleaning but try only with a microfiber cloth.
