Not girdling but overlapping root - would you cut it ?
Comments (9)Ron, I limb it up a bit because some other (small) trees and shrubs are growing not far away that I think will appreciate a little more space next year. The diameter of the branch I cut is no more than 1.5 cm (a birch can take that, I think), I prefer to do it now than when it's 2.5 cm (an inch or so). The idea is just to make some room for the understory plantations. I'll try to take a picture of the whole tree tomorrow to show you the context/surroundings, it's already dark here by now. Comments (14)Kristopher, The mystery Citrandarin (possibly US 852) has about 20 fruit set on this season after an incredible bloom. Several of us are trying to graft and take cuttings from it this summer. My bud grafts (onto existing citrumelo) were not terribly successful. Maybe 50% stayed green, and of those, some may have been 'blind' buds which will not grow. I'm trying to force the green ones into growth right now. Looks like I may have several cuttings that are actually rooting. These are in a large plastic semi-clear storage container with about 3" of soil/perlite mix. The box sits outdoors in mostly shade. I'm also growing several Flying Dragons in pots from seed as potential rootstock for future budding attempts. Photo by Boca Joe. Comments (6)Bass, Can I assume that when you say "moss" you mean peat (peat moss) and not New Zealand sphagnum moss (the expensive stuff, probably hard to find) or decorative "green moss" (not sphagnum)? Sorry to nitpick, but all the different names we use can confuse people! By the way, has anyone ever tried using sphagnum (the NZ stuff), maybe even 100% as a rooting medium (other than for air-layering)? It can be very easily made barely moist but not wet. It's also supposed to have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. If nothing else it might make a nice but expensive substitute for paper in bag rooting experiments. If one is short on metal hangers (do they sell them much anymore?), bamboo stakes or fragments of them make good frameworks for plastic bags....See MoreUser
