Pa gardener moving to Raleigh area: Advice?
Comments (16)I've lived here since 2000 and I have seen a big change in the weather in that short amount of time. I have no idea what a normal year is anymore. Lately our summers have had long stretches of hot and very dry. Winters are generally mild but cold enough to burn some evergreens or winter growers. Lilacs like more alkaline soil so if you build a bed just for them and follow some basic feeding rules they will grow and bloom here - but they won't look like the bushes up north. They aren't easy but they are possible. Lavender only works well for me if I plant it in a raised bed of mounded up soil that is half and half topsoil and gravel. They hate wet feet, mainly in the winter (damp winters are common). Hollyhocks do fine but Rust is everywhere and tends to wipe them out. There are some pure species ones sold locally that tend to be immune but they only come in a pale yellow color. Only some of the primrose (Primula) varieties do well. There are a couple of nurseries that offer them so some people do succeed with them, mostly as bog plants. Everything else on your list does fine here. Most of the common tulips are one year only plants (winters too short and mild), Daffs are easy and do well. I don't see a lot of tree peonies around but some people do grow them (I have a few). It may just be because they are soooo expensive that they are not common. I don't think the full spectrum of colors do well here. You should check out: plantdelights.com in south Raleigh, they offer some of the tree peony/garden peony hybrids that do really well in their show gardens. Some day I'll win the lottery and fill my yard with them....See MoreWestern Pa Plant Swap, Anyone Interested

Linda and her Hubby are going to do a demo on making plant tags, they are wonderful to use in the garden. Now I need to go and check on plants that I promised people that I would bring to the swap. Comments (29)I just came back from the Lehigh Valley Home and Garden Center, 4220 Crackersport Rd., in Allentown. It is near my house so I am somewhat of a regular although it has never impressed me much. Today it was really hoppin' and they had a whole bunch of really neat stuff. Perhaps the other times I went weren't at peak season. Anyway, I found the darling plant I've been looking for, a dwarf japanese white pine, Pinus parviflora, and it was reasonably priced. They had some gorgeous japanese maples, nice selection of perrenials, conifers, etc. Overall a very nice selection, so if you hit them at the right time I would recommend that place. There are several nice nurseries in the Lehigh Valley, but not that near Allentown. My favorite is Glenmar Nursery, between Bath and Wind Gap. They are not cheap but the quality is outstanding. I also like Albanse Nursery, just outside of Wind Gap, great selection of fruit trees among other things. Another awesome place is Edge of the Woods Nursery outside of Fogelsville. The best place for natives and good planting and gardening advice. They also do landscaping. They have a great Web site. There's another place just off of Rt. 22 and 512 N, just outside of Bethlehem across from Wegmans. I go there all the time but I can't remember the name! Point Phillips Perrenials is way north of Bath but is worth the trip, they have one of the most comprehensive perennial collections I have ever seen, plus the display garden is awesome!...See MoreNeed Custom Cabinet Recommendations- PA/NY/NJ
Comments (43)Thanks munkel. I will add them too. My builder has some people he'd like me to talk to as well. He is great, he was fine when I told him we wouldn't use the person he had originally sent us to and is willing to either work w/ whomever we find our help us to find someone he has worked w/ before. We also got another quote back, from paradise custom kitchens. they came in a little higher than wellsford- $38,000 + $4000-$5000 installation + tax, but that wasn't too bad either. So, we are meeting w/ wellsford on tuesday and going to oxford cabinets on tuesday, and we're also waiting for quotes back from a few other people that I sent pictures to via email....See More- 6 years ago
