Generally as long as weather and water are adequate lettuce does fine and will rebound from wilting. I have even seen what I would have thought impossible. Frozen lettuce turn to mush and then recover completely once the sun came out. On the warm days give the lettuce lots of water in containers, never let it go even close to dry.

Thanks, I will look that up. I knew that I planted my first seeds a little bit late, but I guess it was silly of me to try anyway while it's still so warm out. I'll probably wait until the Fall, then plant more radishes, lettuce, etc. I don't think there's much of anything that can make it through a Texas Summer. I just got over excited lol. Do you have any tips on an organic option for pesticide that what works well? I'd really like to be better prepared for the next planting season. Also, do you think it would be ok to start a compost now, even if it doesn't get used until August? Thanks for your help!

Didn't see any aphids on the lettuce. Tom Thumb is growing so low to the ground, if there are aphids on the underside of the leaves, I'm not going to be able to spray them off. Not tall like Romaine, they're like those miniature heads you see packed 3 to a clamshell in the store. The ants aren't eating the lettuce, but I wonder if they're damaging it as they build their nests/tunnels. I see quite a few in the spot where I put my Little Leaf cukes (not germinated yet) too, I've got cilantro volunteers down one end of that bed and they're not bothering it - yet. But the cilantro is very close to the mustard that's toast now.
