oil vs latex trim and waterborne and wall questions
Comments (10)Paintguy, Thank you so much for your in-depth response - which of course triggered more questions:) hee hee Trim - After your post and speaking with the SW and BM sales guys I think I'm set on doing a latex trim. It just makes more sense. My trim is very dark. So the SW guy told me to use the All Surface enamel because he said the waterborne Pro Classic cannot be done in dark colors. He recommended using a Preprite Holds Gloss Primer on it and then the All Surface enamel gloss. Do you think that is a low quality paint? I looked up Graham paint - none in Charlotte, NC. So I looked up Muralo. They have it listed at a hardware store here. Could that really be superior to a SW or BM bought from a paint store? Oh and the SW guy also told me no dark trim can be made in a waterborne - he said only light to medium trim colors in waterborne. He also said the painter could put in a float or slow trowl product to allow the spread of the brush marks to spread smoother. Wall color - I totally agree about the chalkiness of flat. Plus I am doing dark rich colors that may mar easily. I used BM Regal washable matte in the last house and liked it. But the SW sales rep told me Duration Home is much superior. He said the finish isn't quite as "creamy" as the Cashmere, but it holds up much better. Also, Cashmere and Duration Home in matte cannot be done in dark colors, only in light to medium tones. He said I had to use Color Accents for dark colors like crabby apple red. He said the dark could be done in Duration Home only if I did it in satin or semi. I don't know if the Color Accents is very durable and it will be in a semi-busy area. And I don't know if it goes on nicely. You mentioned the Duration Home looks "gritty" Does that mean you like the BM Regal Matte better, or do you have another washable choice brand you like best? SW guy says it's not quite as nice as Cashmere, but close. If I go satin won't both look nice? If I use satin in both will the Duration still be more durable? Lastly, we went to see a painters work today. He had a lot of flashing on the medium tone painted ceiling. He said it was a normal issue. It was very obvious around the recessed lights, which they said where dropped down and painted around and it was very obvious at the ceiling to wall cut-in line. SW guy told me that it was because he didn't keep a wet edge and that with a dark color on the ceiling the painter should have the cut in guy go first, followed immediately by the roller. YOUR Opinion? The thing that turned me off mostly about this man's work was the fact that he caulks last in the attempt to make the cut-in line sharper. He says he paints over the caulk, but we saw a finished home and there was no doubt the white caulk could be seen between the cream trim and the light green wall. I thought it looked like a odd way to get a straight line. What concerns me more though is my trim is dark chocolate, so obviously caulking last wouldn't work. This was a HIGH end custom painter, doing million dollar homes! I have never, in all my homes, seen it done this way...is it a new practice? Sorry so long. Thank you again SO very much for the responses!!! Squirt...See MoreBM paint - have some questions, please
Comments (27)Oh my goodness, such wonderful advice here. Thank you all so very much! Well, I got up the courage and put three colors on the walls..... and none of them shouted 'the one'... grrr. Good thing I didn't just pick a chip and buy the paint! DH and DS are no help, they commented all the colors looked the same to them. No, No, No.... can't you SEE that this one has more gray, this one has more brown, this one is too light..... :) olga d - I have to cover a Hunter Green wall in the dining room. Yikes! I am hoping for the good coverage they claim. ainsley (and cat mom) when I googled the Aura paint, I came across a message board where that very same discussion was going on. One poster 'hated' Aura and said it showed roller marks on her ceiling. A BM dealer posted that it was not meant to be used on ceilings. cat mom, I am sorry, I don't really remember the reason she said that. september home - thanks for the directions. I read some of those on this other board in defense of Aura from the *haters* it was ALL due to not following the directions and painting in the old, familiar way of re-rolling a newly painted area. It is a caution I put to the test today :) I started my samples swatches with an el-cheapo brush.... huge mistake, when I tried to clean up the look, I made it worse. I will not make THAT mistake again :) OT question September - do you live in Indiana or near by? I remember a poster with "sept" in the name being very helpful when I had to choose my cabinet paint and my GC was using Porter Paints. If it was you, Thank you! I can't find my old post to see if it was you or if I remembered to thank you for your kind help....See MoreBenjamin Moore vs. Sherwin Williams?
Comments (60)My husband and I painted our whole house with Home Depot Behr Ultra Scuff Defense Stain Blocking paint and primer; flat for walls and ceilings, and satin for doors and moldings. We used fine quality paint brushes and rollers. The paint handled beautifully and is quite durable and looks great. We took our time, lightly sanded all doors and moldings first, washed and rinsed all walls and ceilings prior to painting. We did all the correct prep work. I even got a 10% military discount ( I am a retired Air Force Captain). Our house looks great! I have used BM and SW in past homes I lived in. BEHR is just as good. I painted my front door about 10 years ago, also with BEHR and it looks as good as the day I painted it. We since replaced our front door with a high end fiberglass door, and plan to paint it with BEHR when the pollen dies down in the air. I can also assure you that there is no professional painter that would have ever taken the time to do all the prep work my husband and I did prior to painting. We are semi retired and have the luxury to take the time to do a great paint job! I have read countless Houzz threads on botched professional paint jobs in expensive homes. As my Dad always says: if you want the job done right, do it yourself....See MoreWhat is your current favorite paint brand?
Comments (35)I don't color match from brand to brand and I don't try to customize, personally. Since I have tended not to fully repaint, ever, in a different colors (I've moved first, I guess) --I want complete reproducibility, because I do touch up. I couldn't find exactly what I wanted in Benjamin Moore for particular room this time and that's when I went to Fine Paints of Europe, there, and that meant buying a fandeck, too. What this means is, if I am committed to using a particular paint brand, and I can't find exactly the shade in say, Behr, that I would prefer in Benjamin Moore, I will use the "close enough" in Behr. (This would be if I were picking paint for someone else--I would use BM or FPE but many people will not spend the money). Because quite honestly, I don't think that you can really tell the difference between two subtle differences in paint color if an entire room is painted in it and you are not comparing one swatch to the next. If you have no point of reference to what the exact color is, I don't think anybody could walk into a room that had one of two very close paint colors and say "this is X, not Y" And I get an almost perfect score on those color discernment tests where you have to separate and line up different shades in order. However, if you custom mix or have had color matches made that are not a specific formula within a paint brand, it can be almost impossible to get a match from mix to mix if you need to touch up....See MoreSammy
