Groof: (grumpy floof): Dumb Commercials

Welcome to my grumpy mind this morning. I dont know why I am grumpy, but I am. AnyWAY....to the topic.

We have all seen commercials that make us go "Huh?" The beauty of most commercials, however, is that they are usually ever-changing. But there is one that has been running seemingly forever that irritates me. Special K. Let's break it down shall we?

"Women are AMAZING." (ALL women?)

"Our bodies grow BABIES." (Really, like all by themselves? That is amazing. Oh, wait, no. You do need a man for that. And not all women can "grow" babies. Does that make them not amazing?-YES I KNOW I AM READING TO MUCH INTO THIS!)

"We run marathons." (So do men)

"Companies" (So do men)

"Solve problems." (So so men, children of both genders, animals of all sorts......)

"How do we do it?" (DO WHAT????)

"We eat. We eat, and we own it." (HUH?)

Cut to views of various women triumphantly shoveling cereal in their mouths, staring into the camera DARING anyone to challenge the fact that they are eating...THEY OWN IT. Women fiercely ripping open bags of what i assume are some sort of Special K Snack, same look. I AM WOMAN,WATCH ME EAT........AND OWN IT, apparently.

Its hard for me sometimes to put into words WHY this is so irritating to me. It's just so DUMB!!!!! I just don't get the concept. Is it supposed to make me, as a women, feel somehow empowered? It's silly in the worst way.

Sorry if my grump rubs off on anyone today. And thanks for letting me grump.

Another one that was so dumb that drove me nuts was, I believe it was, flonase that treats 6 allergy symptoms vs. other brands that treat only 1...and 6 is greater than 1!!!

Thank you so much for telling me. I had no idea 6 was greater than 1! Who knew??

I don't watch much tv but one that sticks out in my mind is the Charmin, "Enjoy the go" commercials with the cartoon bears.

I hate all the "meds" ones. A low voice at the end..."do not take if you are

allergic to it". How in heck do you know if you are allergic if you have never

taken it? Makes one wonder why anyone thinks they are sick...we have

all these wonderful, miracle drugs available to us. ;) Not.

.....or when they list all the side effects. Mmmmm, that would certainly make me want to try them.

my son complains about this commercial. I remind him, she's not saying men aren't amazing (HA!), but you're not alone.

commercials where kids make big MESSES and mom/dad just kind of chuckle and clean up after them... how true to life is that scenario? does it actually sell more paper towels or whatever?

commercials for over processed, chemical laden snack foods. especially ones where a horde of teenage boys swarm the fridge and pick it clean. and mom just rolls her eyes as $25-30 worth of food is devoured... without anyone asking if they could first.

commercials where kids, sometimes adults get food on their mouth as a sign of how good it is. Also commercials where people lick their fingers.

I haven't seen that commercial but I don't watch much TV these days. My impression is that Special K commercials are usually directed at women and not at men.

Dairy Queen had to take down a commercial yesterday that was laying a shaming guilt trip on working moms into taking their kids to Dairy Queen for a family outing.

I despise that commercial with the kid calling his mom, "Mom, we have a situation." What in the heck is that boy wearing such a huge belt? and Why has someone not taught him HOW to take the dang belt off? Boy saying over and over "I hate this belt, I hate this belt", really irks me. Why hate the belt? It did nothing wrong. LOL

There used to be a commercial for Clorox wipes, where the grandmother, mother and young daughter were making spaghetti sauce or something on the stove. A drop landed on the counter, and the grandmother busted a gut getting to the Clorox wipes. Holy cow, if your cooking is so toxic that it needs Clorox, I wouldn't be feeding it to the kids.

Rob,it's not that I think it's excluding men,per se.(even though my immediate thought was,men do that too) The whole thing is just dumb. Everyone eats. What the heck does that have to do with being AMAZING? And why do you "own" eating. You can't DENY eating when you are eating,no need to "own it."

Like I said ,I am having a hard time explaining my annoyance in words,exactly...

I find that Cottenelle commercial kind of gross. It's the one where people are asked to use it to wipe and then go commando and describe how clean they feel. I mean, really?

I can't remember if it was an ad for laundry soap or for a washing machine, but one that used to bug the heck out of me was one where the family was on a camping trip. They get home and there is a huge pile of laundry to do. While dad and the kids are relaxing and watching tv the mom is doing the laundry all by herself. I used to yell at the tv asking why wasn't the rest of the family helping the poor mom.

And, then there was the one for Clorox wipes. It depicted a family of a husband, 2 or 3 sons and mom. It showed the men of the family going in and out of the bathroom followed by mom who wiped down the toilet with the Clorox wipes. Then the narrator would say something like "for those in between bathroom cleanings." I was like, "what the heck, why can't the men clean up after themselves???"

That last one steamed me so bad that I actually sent a letter to the advertiser complaining. While I certainly won't take credit, because I doubt my one letter had much influence, it wasn't long after that the commercial stopped running. Good riddance!

I do think the one with the kid struggling with his belt is kind of funny. Maybe because it reminds me of incidents that happened while I was working for an elementary school.

amylou, I agree that Special K commercial is annoying. I always thought the message they were trying to get across is that women do all these amazing things and shouldn't be afraid to eat and fuel their bodies, specifically with Special K.

Dawn,I get that. But to me it missed the mark COMPLETELY. It reminds me of women who like to boast that they are "independent." "I pay my OWN bills." Oh, you mean you're like,an ADULT?????? I wanted to scream that just because someone gets knocked up does, runs a marathon, whatever does not make her "amazing." And being proud that you eat (or "own it") is just....i don't know....weird.

And Special K is gross anyway. Ill take some cocoa puffs please. (And own it)

Amylou, I think that ad is yet another jab at women's body images. Telling us it's ok to eat is extremely insulting.

During the day when I'm working around the house I keep the tv on a station that shows older shows. The ads are patronizing and the narration is aimed as to stupid children whom they hope will use their products/businesses. I can only think they hope to capture the dementia crowd.

The commercial I like now is for sling TV. I remember a few years ago there was a commercial on that was something about kids eating something. It made it sound like it would help for kids to get anorexic or bulimic. I wish I could remember what it was for though. After a few months of listening to it I called someone. All I remember is that they tried to tell me they have no control over what the local stations use for commercials. I told them it is your product and you should have some control over the commercials for it. I never saw that commercial again,

I seldom watch commercials but sometimes you just can’t help it and can’t tune them out. Yes the drug companies seem to need to CYA and give us the entire list of side effects and list of people who shouldn’t take their drug du jour. I would rather just not hear any of it and let my physician decide, thank you very much. Save us all some money and quit advertising!

For the love, must we still listen to all the Depends, tampon, hair growth, and viagra commercials? Aren’t there SOME things we can still figure out on our own?

And yes, Annie, 6 is still greater than 1. Gotta love that logic there.

The one that bugs me is the car ad that proudly states, "Real people, not actors". Does this imply that actors are not people?

Many years ago, Maxwell House Coffee ran ads that stated, "Good to the last drop." A lady wrote to the company and asked, what's wrong with that last drop? Isn't that good, too?. Maxwell House added a tag line to their ad: "and that drop's good, too." She was rewarded for her effort.

Jemdandy, that one really drives me crazy as the 'real people' on those ads appear to be dumb as stumps.

I've gotten quite good at avoiding commercials by taping the things I like or watching Netflix. The noise of commercials yackety-yackety-yack so loud is awful. Drug ones are the worst (thanks to CNN especially).

I have seen some insurance ones where they show something that actually happened (moose stuck in a swingset). Those are amusing but certainly made no other impression on me since I cannot tell you which insurance co.

Those insurance ones are funny (I especially laughed at the one with the big cat/mountain lion on he hood and the laser pointer). But they seem to show them over and over until they are tiresome.

The Labradoodle.....a Labrador that can draw.....Sonic commercial. I did remember what place they were advertising, missed the point where I wanted to eat their food.....

There are so many that drive me nuts.

The young girl with a supremely snotty voice saying her mother has to WASH THE DISHES before putting them in the dishwasher. So WHAT IS THE DISHWASHER FOR? Use their dishwashing tabs to avoid doing this ...

The young boy with another snotty voice commenting on sharing the wifi with everyone else.

The gummy bears commercial where adults in suits around a boardroom table are talking in kiddie voices. "I like the red ones, they're gooder" or something like that.

There are more, will have to think of them.

I despise commercials of any kind-unless they're truly funny. There's a few for Orkin I believe, that make my DH and I giggle. Gigantic cockroach/ant like creature with hairy arms that drives a car. It kind of acts like a mobster of some kind. There's different scenarios for the ad. There's also a cute one with different versions of a family of Golden Retrievers driving a car and acting like a human family.

I cannot stand the drug commercials. Most prevalent between 6 and 7 during the evening news. Aimed at the baby boomers like me. And I've noticed a pattern lately. The newest drugs seemed to be introduced on Mondays. My husband knows to automatically mute the remote during those ads and pretty much all others if I'm in the room.

The whole paper towel Bounty commercial is annoying.

*Child spills juice* Not even a young child!

“More chores for Mom per roll.”

”More chores for dad per roll.”

*Mom and Dad cleans it up for child.*

CLEAN IT UP CHILD! It makes me so annoyed that an eight year old can’t clean up his own mess.
