What dictates Bloom/ Stem size in a container

3 Hydra's in Containers.

10G Bloomstruck - when purchased, rootbound, repotted into 30G

ES 5G and 3G. Both in 10G pot

Bloomstuck blooms - while many (to the tune of 60+ bloom), stems are thin yet tall. It would take 4-5 of the Bloomstruck Blooms to = 1 of the other Mac Blooms I have.

5GES - Humming along. Big leaves, stems, big blooms

3G ES- Sited in the same location as the 5G. As crazy as this may sound, but every BLOOM on the smaller 3G are larger than the 5G.

Riddle me this. What dictates bloom size of a hydra (if the principal in discussion is different in container vs. dirt). Soil medium is the same, watering regimin fairly the same.

Is it literally the genetics of the cutting/particular plant plug that can be show different results of the same cultivar ?

Genetics is a large part. Availability of minerals (pots versus ground) is also another factor Available sunlight. Size of the root system. etc.

Hi afan, maybe i’m way off base but your Z7 NY you’ll will need Winter protection even with the size of your pots as Luis mentioned Sun/ location l also think in gound is better . Then again no more Macs for me to much work there far too many Great Hys...

Since you are in zone 7a, I would recommend pruning 50% of the plant and potting it into a 3-5 gallon container, if it's at least 2.5-3 feet tall and then bring it indoors when temperatures start to drop below 60ish. That will promote side shoots and bushiness to keep it a manageable size indoors. Then what you can do is take the parts of the plant that you cut off and stick them into smaller pots of soil and they will root like mad. When I prune my Cestrum's I always take the stems and pot them - they all root! I would wager some rooting hormone would make the success rate practically 100%! Just keep the soil and the cuttings moist. :) That is of course if you have the space for them. Outdoors here they tend to grow somewhat lopsided... some stalks will be tall while others short. They practically die back to the ground in winter here in N. FL with no protection and suffer no damage at all when protected, so they are more like a perennial here in warm temperate zones. You might even try planting some of your pruned cuttings outdoors and protecting them with mulch, straw, plastic and blankets and they just might spring back up for you in 7a. :) Hope this helps!

Is your hibiscus in the ground? If so, considering you're in zone 8, you most likely have a Rose of Sharon, (Hibiscus syriacus). If it's in a pot, it could be either. Miniature tropical hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) blooms are defined as: "Miniatures Section - single or double bloom which is under 5 inches and out of seedling class". Asiatic lilies are very hardy - zone 4 , maybe even 3. I'd recommend planting them in the ground in a sunny location with well draining soil. They tend not to rebloom as proficiently if left in the container year after year. You can remove the top portion of the stems, where the old flowerheads were located, but otherwise leave all the rest of the stems and foliage in place to recharge the bulb for next year. Lilies bloom just the one time each season so you will have to wait until next year for more flowers. And expect it to bloom later (June) once planted in the ground. Yours was forced into an early bloom for Easter sale.

Assuming you mean tomato plants then a single plant is all that can even tolerate only 5 gallons. And even then it is heavily stressed. So what and where have you been reading differently? Now whether you prune that plant to a single stem or not is your choice. It sure isn't required in any way. A single un-pruned plant with multiple stems - which is normal for most tomato plants - is not the same thing as putting multiple plants in the same container regardless of the container size. Have you been pruning your plants in 15 gallon containers to single stems too? If so, why? Dave

I was suprise...posted this already. The bloomstruck pot literally was frozen to the ground. When I attempted to move it, the soil underneath an about 20" or so past the diameter of the 30G pot (thinking 5 feet overall diameter) - a good 5 feet of soil diameter was literally heaving off the ground. I thought I killed the poor thing...and strangely it has developed 60+ blooms.

Yes, soil will fare better. Just slightly sorta surprised that the blooms in the 2G is larger in size than the 5G. Loving the Let's Dance as the bloom size has shown it's potential.

I'm not so sure about the Bloomstruck and is it showing half it's potential as I find the blooms small. Many blooms, just small

Which of the Let's Dance hydrangeas did you choose and why? The LDs should be smaller than Bloomstruck, right?

Shrub size yes. Bloomstruck is supposed to be larger (it's currently in a pot). The LD are in dirt On my LD Rhytmic and Rave, the blooms are a smigen smaller than my ES. But they're a good 6 inches or so with a couple smaller ones at 4 inches. I feel like the BS are more like 2 to 2 1/2" on average.

Ha. My mental measuring tape. Let me do some real measuring later

It can't be the pot though as the ES blooms are huge though.
