I think I planted a rose too high, should I redo?
Comments (7)MadGallica, it is always surprising to me how little I know and still stumble along. [g] And here I was feeling guilty that I hadnâÂÂt gotten that rose in the ground yet, when I could have waited two more weeks. Yes, I realize the delivery wasnâÂÂt too early for the usual spring, I requested last week of March for delivery. My ground was still frozen and I had snow on the ground when they arrived and they had to wait in the refrigerator for 10 more days before I could plant. I only potted up one and then decided the rest had new growth on them and IâÂÂd just wait it out. The other bare root roses were planted in the ground weeks ago and are all growing well so far. I donâÂÂt know if it is a grafted rose. I ordered from Pickering and it is a David Austin, âÂÂBrother CadfaelâÂÂ. On their website they discuss that they use R. multiflora as a rootstock, so I assume that means they are grafted? And I found a drawing of where the graft is supposed to be planted [below] and IâÂÂm pretty sure mine is too high. I also am planting in an exposed area and would like to give the plant a little more help with winter weather and wondered if I should plant it a little deeper. But there are leaves growing low on the shrub now. In the drawing below, they show the soil mounded up around the bottom of the stems and the graft right about at ground level, is that right? Well, Sunday IâÂÂll try to dig it up and IâÂÂll post a photo of the rose so I can get it right this time....See MoreHack Job on New Stairs? What should I do? :-(
Comments (50)Posted by jellytoast on Fri, Aug 1, 14 at 18:06 Okay, so let's say that Hippy's job costs are on the low end of the spectrum. That is still a HUGE discrepancy. How long did the job take? I must confess. The only reason I got the stair & railing along with the kitchen counters and cabinets done so cheap is. I built and installed them both myself from rough cut lumber. Bought the hand rails and Bartered for the Wrought iron spindles from a friend. I have less than $250 total in the wood and labor used on the ceiling of the living room. It came from the loft of an old barn that was being torn down. I cleaned it up, ripped to a 6" width and planed on all four sides....See MoreShould I redo my kitchen cabinets if I'm doing a remodel?
Comments (3)I think it depends largely on the condition of the cabinets, since you wouldn't want to invest in a new countertop on worn out cabinets. I'm keeping mine and doing a minor facelift. I prefer the look of hinges showing, too. If you have plans to move soon, though, it might be worth seeing how your neighborhood real estate is going. My parents had a realtor look at their home before their remodel. She recommended not doing a thing for resale value; they did the remodel anyway, but knowing it was for their enjoyment, not investment. Do your cabinets work well for you? If not, might be worth saving for. I'm on the conservative side when it comes to money and resources, though....See MoreShould I redo the cabinets and counter top?
Comments (23)Granite in a kitchen in a house valued at $100,000? NOPE, that's a waste of money. You won't begin to recoup what you spend for it. And everyone is changing out their tile countertops, at least from what I see on this site. (It's that grout, who wants to clean the cooking dreck out of the grout?) I would consider NOT buying a house with tiled countertops in the kitchen, all other things being equal. Some people really prefer stained cabinets over painted. I can like the look of either, but unless you get a true pro to do the job ($$$), it's going to look cheapened. Those cabinets look fine to me, and would not dissuade me from making an offer. It's the curb appeal (driveway) you may want to be focusing on. Oh, and see if you can bleach the floor tile grout in the shower as white as possible - or see if there is a way to make it all look like it's supposed to be one light sand or gray color of grout......See MoreRelated Professionals
