Overhead Peninsula Cabinets -- Keep or Remove? (Pictures)
Comments (22)What you have now is VERY similar to what we once had. In my old kitchen, the pantry was where your ovens are, the desk was where your pantry is, and my stove was where your desk is. I promise you, if you remove those hanging cabinets, the room will feel HUGE, like twice its size without doing anything else. It appears you will not be short on storage space without them. I know what you mean about fixing the end that is now unfinished. If the cabs are taken down carefully, perhaps the finished end that now faces the desk could be placed above the small finished part of the longer cab (currently facing the cooktop). I know there will be a seam, but if that seems too noticeable, maybe hang something on that side, like a larger decorative trivet or a leaded glass piece? Definitely something washable, since it's near the cooktop. Just a thought, but I definitely empathize with your situation. I was so glad we took our "room divider" down- best decision we ever made and never looked back....See MoreBuilt ins. should I keep them or remove them?
Comments (18)Thank you for all the suggestions. Do not be sorry for saying your opinion, I have understood that everyone has different choice and likes. So I will not mind. We do not have any book collections. So I am not sure what I will be storing in them. The first photo was taken when the house was staged. To make it look that I need to but those huge books that we do not read. :). Jokes apart we will using the space as secondary TV room\entertainment area for big gathering. We already have another primary family room. I like low maintenance, with so many shelves I need to do regular dusting which I am not up for. We are painting all the windows and trims and base boars white in the room. I do not like the wood color. It make the room dark. Here are the additional photos of that room. These photos are from listing so the room looks brighter, but believe it does look this bright in reality. To explain my choice, I know adding a window seat that current height would be too high. So I wanted to reduce the height and get it to 20 inches. We may have to change the window in the future as these are really old. When we do that we can get bigger window that will match the window seat height. I hope that makes sense....See MoreKeep built in shelves all white?
Comments (9)A fresh paint color on the back of the bookshelves would help a lot, especially if you don’t have much color in the room. You could also pull that paint color out and repeat it with pillows or accessories. I would also rearrange your bookshelves, and instead of having one object displayed per shelf, such a picture frame, I would incorporate plants, books, small art, etc. to make it more interesting. There are tons of examples of bookshelf styling on Pinterest if you’d like to make your bookshelves look more stylish....See MoreNew Build Kitchen Removing Cabinets for Open Shelving
Comments (10)Depending on the cabinet construction it definitely could be attached, or (preferably, in this case) just attached to the wall. If the cabinets are attached it's likely just a few screws, you'd just need to patch and paint the holes (or replace the panel which will be next to impossible), though your results may vary. Are your cabinets going to be painted or stained? If painted, would they be prefinished or painted in place after installation? If they're painted in place you'd open up another can of worms with an unfinished spot. Could you ask the contractor who's building your house, or the cabinet supplier?...See Morebossyvossy
