Tropical Plants Perennials

Please ID this tropical(?) Plant

I was given this plant as a bare root in early May (so this is less than 2 months grow) and was told "it's tropical, so you have to dig it up and put it inside for winter". That is all the information I have. I find it gorgeous and I want to keep it alive! Any IDs please and advice on year round care? I'm in zone 7, hot humid summers (80-95F, cold snowy winters down to the teens sometimes) Thanks in advance. The man who gave it to me treats the plant as an annual and purchased from his church sale so he didn't have care tips.

in my ground freeze z5 MI ... they need to be dug... and stored in the closest thing one might have to a root cellar ....

i am surprised they would need to be in z7 .... though it wouldnt surprise me.. they need to be divided every year or two ... hence the church sale ... anything that return 4 to 6 tubers after planting one.. is one always something to give away .. lol ...

the old standard is red .. we would need to see a flower to get any closer on an actual name ...

we would dig them in october some time ... before hard freeze .. and let them dry on the soil surface [harvest them like a potato] ... while cutting off the foliage like sugar canes.. and tying them to the awning supports for Halloween and then adding some potted mums for a fall display ...

I'll add my voice to the choir that it's a schefflera. You do see them now and then around the valley. There's one on the NE side of Scottsdale Fashion Square too. The small leaf one is Schefflera arboricola, also sometimes called miniature schefflera or Hawaiian schefflera. It has the same hardiness and is another plant I see now and then around the Valley. There's a nice big one in the courtyard of Scottsdale Marketplace on Scottsdale road. Both are good houseplants too of course, and both are a bit of a gamble outside, but even after this winter I see them looking pretty good still. Let us know if you grow one indoors or out.
