What are these bricks above my fireplace for? Can I remove them?

So I recently removed the stones from the face of the fireplace all the way up the ceiling. Behind the stones was this stack of bricks (the black marks are spray paint). I would really like to drywall this entire wall flush with the walls to the side but the bricks stick out about 1 inch at it's worst spot. If I can't remove these bricks then I guess I will have to do some sort of build-out the width of the fireplace or a little more. The wall of bricks sitting on top of the fireplace isn't really secured (wobbles if you push towards the top) and the 2x4 that looks like its using the bricks on the right doesn't have any weight on it at all. (Also, just an FYI, there used to be french doors to the right of the fireplace and the previous owner closed off that wall and moved the french doors to the East side of the house - that's why there are so many 2x4s there...). Long story short, can I remove these bricks? What is their purpose?
