Ideas needed for updating 70s wood panel and trim

We are wanting to update our house. Some updates/remodeling was done by the previous owner. What we are left with now is a combination of 70s wood paneling, railing, trim, doors (see pictures); some white trim and oak baseboards.

Our plan is to update most doors and baseboards to white. Where I am stuck is what to do with the wood railing (which is in great shape), the wainscoting / wood paneling (it is real wood), and the fireplace (behind the piano). We have no plans to replace the fireplace or tile at this time.

I know there are strong opinions either way, but I do want to paint the panels to brighten up the house. We want to keep the french doors (real wood, individual glass panes) as they are and would paint the frame. How do we make the rest of the area flow? Should we paint the entire railing? Just the spindles? Paint the paneling over the fireplace and leave the mantle? Could we just leave the decorative trim of the panels to help with the flow?

Any help / suggestions greatly appreciated.
