A Tough call. My pears are usually more susceptible to fireblight than my apples as apples recover easier than pears. Trimming off the deadish FB stems to just below the infected areas may save them as long as the main trunk is unaffected.

Have you researched fire blight, how it occurs and how to control? There is a lot of excellent info out there (including photos to clarify) so I would start there. Generally, I would suggest you focus on any websites that have an .edu suffix, as these articles and publications are coming from the land grant universities/extension services and they specialize in this sort of data.

Fire Blight Information and Control

You certainly do not need to remove a tree that has experienced fire blight. It is not 'contagious' per se and it does not affect or persist in the soil.

Can you post photos of your affected trees? If we can see them, perhaps we can make some suggestions as to how to help them for this season. And read up and get prepared to spray to prevent instances of FB next spring. It is very weather related so not a given that you will be infested very year.

Fire blight attacks new growth on trees, sometimes through the blooms. Some varieties are get it more readily than others. If you planted resistant varieties, it may just kill the top few inches and stop. Do not over fertilize, that will cause any variety to get fire blight.

I have had pear trees get the fire blight the first year and survive. Putting the trees in the ground can give it extra vigor and can cause it to get fire blight. Make sure and not add additional Nitrogen for the rest of the year. Only put out small amount next year if they survive.

Thanks for your replies! I will try to get some pics up. I know that it’s not contagious exactly, but I know that it’s spread by pollinators and I was told that pollinators could spread it to nearby trees if they are blooming at the same time (thinking of my young pears). I’ll keep reading up. Having young trees is a new experience for me.
