Picea Orientalis Spring Frost Full Sun or Part Shade?

Hi, I have the Picea Orientalis Spring Frost in full sun in a container. It's in the 5 1 1 mix. It's been in the 80's every day and there's some browning on some branches. Conifer Kingdom list this plant as needing part shade. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm in Virginia and I'm having similar issues with mine. Mine is in the ground, but it's small and was planted in March. The top sides of some of the new growth browned and fell away about a month ago, but the rest of the new growth is fine. From what I gather most people have no trouble keeping it in full sun. The burning hasn't gotten worse for me in spite of the hotter weather and the plant seems fine now so I'm just blaming it on needing to be more established. I'm keeping an eye on it and hoping for the best.

Is yours new?

Thanks. I've had it in a pot for 3 years. This is its first year in the 5 1 1 mix. It used to be in a peat based potting mix.

Here's a closeup of the browning on the new growth.

Both are beautiful specimens Mike. Your 'Skylands' is a knockout and that 'Tom Thumb Gold' was a bargain. I would have definately snatched up a big one like that for that price. I have mine planted on the west side of my house but it is shaded from the South by a larger conifer so it gets mostly late afternoon sun. Eastern exposure would probably be ideal but I'm sure anybody that can grow a 'Skylands that looks that good will have no problem with 'TTG' :). Dan

Will, thank you for continuing this parade of cultivars. This one is one of my favourites. You know, I have a list of cultivars that my garden should have twice. 'Tom Thumb Gold' is on the top places of this list along with 'Golden Spreader', 'Kohout's Icebreaker','Blaue Hexe' and several others. For now I only have one thumb. Can't wait to see it develope a leader in later years (I think I've seen an Iseli image of a pyramidal thumb but I can't find it now). Here is my ball of gold. On the right. 3-4 hours of morning sun and then light to deep shade does the trick for beautiful gold color on my specimen. Best regards, Fotis

Thank you to all, especially Sara Malone, Embothrium, and Alley Cat. We’ve been more vigilant about watering deeply with a hose at the base and will continue to do that until Thanksgiving and for the next 2-3 years. Our soil tends to clay which may have a finer texture than what was in the original potting soil. The tree was planted in the Spring and gets 7-8 hours of sun mostly from the east. Some of the roots were cut to promote growth before placing the tree in the planting hole. So will hope for the best and be patient. My concern had been that cutting off the leader – even a dead one – would lessen the chance for a new leader to grow. Other than being unsightly, would leaving the dead leader on for a while longer be a detriment? A source for insects?

Mine did ok in full sun but it was in the ground. Winter sun got the better of it though

Cant comment on Spring Frost, but I have 3 P. Orientalis Skylands and 1 P Orientalis Aureospicata. 2 of the 3 skylands are in shade as is the aureospicata. They appear to be doing fine. I planted 1 of the skylands in full sun, and while I think/hope it will be fine long term, it is browning and had some branches die this past winter. First I thought it was too much water, but now thinking it was the full sun that caused this damage as I think my shade specimen is in a wetter spot. This thread made me think about and change my mind. Only have pics of 2 of the skylands(sun, shade, planted about 50’ from each other on same date late November 2-3 years ago). I concluded the P. Orientalis can handle shade pretty well. My largest skylands (no pic) gets the least sun and other than the fact that its basically green, it looks healthy. Growth rate is noticeably slower but the tree isnt sparse and weak looking, just green.
