Dead branches in fruit tree - Scottsdale, Arizona

Good morning, I have 4 trees in my yard - grapefruits (x1), orange (x2), tangelo (x1). Last year one of the orange trees dies. I think because I pruned very severely, removing about 1/2 of the canopy. The tree pictured is my tangelo. We love it because it offers good privacy from our neighbors. However, this year I notice that their are many, many dead limbs in the canopy. Having killed a tree already, I am nervous about lopping off so many branches, but I am not sure if it matters if they are already dead. Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.
