Help Remodeling Exterior of a 1960's Home
How can we bring more curb appeal to this home?! How do we handle the asymmetry? We like a more traditional colonial style with some modern appeal and are really struggling with how to update this exterior. Any help or advice is appreciated!

Comments (13)The only thing dated about the house is the wavy trim on the gable, which isn't going to maake much of a difference if you remove it. I happen to like it. "Dated" is a term TV shows used to justify large changes. Your house isn't trendy. Most houses aren't. The beige is a bit boring, but it's nicely done. The real problem is the acres of beige rock. You need more plants. Lots more. No matter how dry your area is, there has to be stuff that can grow there and needs little water. Comments (5)Interesting - I like your theory about someone homesick for New Orleans LOL. As mentioned above, porch cant really be removed without leaving scars - and an overhang much deeper than the rest of the house, which would look funny. Can the balcony be used, does it make sense to open up a room to it? Part of its oddness is that its obvious that there is no door and cant be used. Whats going on under the porch, behind the hedge? Some kind of patio? You could remove the hedge, expand that and make it into useable attractive outdoor living space - framed in a border of flowering fragrant shrubs, 1 or 2 well placed ornamental trees (ie short, placed toward the side of the house), intermixed with perennials/bulbs. You could leave a few of the evergreens - its just the solid wall of them that is so unappealing. What are the rooms on the lower level - would any of those benefit by opening up to a patio? .... or maybe it could be an actual courtyard and by that I mean a professionally designed walled space which fits architecturally with your house.... not an ugly cheap privacy fence from Menards! But then that gets to be expensive too - probably more than just removing the darn thing! Otherwise, maybe just swap out the frilly iron work for something simpler/more linear, with strong horizontal lines as is fitting for this style/era. I agree with the others. Your home just needs a few updates to add to the curb appeal. The first thing I notice is that the shutters on the double windows upstairs are much too small. they are suppose to look like they can close over the window functionally, even if they aren't operational. Summit Colonial III · More InfoThe next biggest impediment is your current landscaping which is blocking the whole middle of your home. Work with a landscape designer to get the right landscaping to enhance, rather than block, your home.
The scalloped trim doesn't work with your home's colonial style. That website I posted earlier will give you good info on colonial style.
Cleaning your roof would help tremendously as it is a large feature.
Painting your front door an accent color to bring focus to your door adds great appeal too. You have a neutral home so you could go in many directions for your accent color.

2 months agoI know it has been 6 years, but I stumbled across this post as I am looking to refresh a 1967 home we just purchased. It is very, very similar to yours! I don't really want to make structural changes, and want it to lean more colonial rather than modern.
I do think these changes would make it better: changing out our doors with ones that are natural wood (or another paint color) with rectangular windows, painting our siding, adding shutters for the colonial look, painting the new shutters, and finally making the landscape better, will make a great difference. I'm curious to see what you may have done in the last 6 years, or if you still live in the home. I have attached a pic of my current home with the gray/blue siding, and the thoughts or possibility with lighter paint colors. Maybe this will give you some ideas.
