Refinished red oak staircase all in Jacobean stain and hate it! HELP.

Hi there,

My 40 year red oak old staircase needed to be redone. Previous colour had red and orange tones that I wanted to get rid off. It all started because I wanted to match my island stain(wood is walnut with a 50/50 pecan/clear stain). That turned beautiful, but on red oak it looked too washed out.

So, after a few stain sampling, I used Jacobean stain for all; threads, spindles, banister, risers, etc.. I was pressed by a few folks and time, however against my better judgement (gut feeling) I knew in my heart I was going to regret it. One sample on one thread does not give you the whole picture. I really thought that the matched with the island and the Jacobean stairs would work, but now I hate how dark it looks. My husband loves it, but I don’t. Ofcourse, this cost me an arm and a leg, but I have to fix it. As a comprise, I explained to my husband there are only 2 solution; First, is a runner to break up the monotone and 2nd it’s to paint, risers and spindles white.

See pic, before and after.. HELP!
