Distressed by Rug Selection
We would be very thankful for some urgent advice for our living room rug.
My husband and I love the distressed / vintage look of rugs. We bought a rug, size 6x9, from West Elm (style Rococo) seen in the first two pictures. This obviously was too small. Then we decided to upscale and look for a rug that was 10x14 from Restoration Hardware, since the West Elm rugs do not come in that larger size.
We just purchased the Arte rug in color 'charcoal/charcoal', but now we are having second thoughts i.e. it's too dark and maybe we needed some pop of color like the existing small Rococo rug. We like blues, but I thought maybe we needed a muted color which is how I ended up with the Arte rug.
After photoshopping the rug into the 3rd photo, we are having doubts.
Please, if you can make any recommendations, we would be very grateful.
Notes:
Sofa size is 113 x 113 x 38 style Metro from Room and Board
2 Ford Swivel Chairs in 'Lecco Smoke' from Room and Board
Our style is Midcentury, (not too) Modern, and Scandinavian. We love Room and Board.
We would love the rug to be in wool with some color. At this time we are holding back on painting the walls.

It's your wall color that's off. that gold wall is very warm, along w/your wood floor and trim. your sofa/chairs are cooler gray tones.
If you want to keep those walls, you'll have to bring in a rug w/warm tones,,like this
Are you up for painting a new color? It sure would make the room look better. Something like this. with white trim.
may I ask why you have that huge, blank wall, and your tv shoved in the corner?
wouldn't you rather get a media console and put the tv above it? If not, how about a console w/a nice piece of art?

We just moved into the house which is why it is a bit barren. The real view is for 'binge' watching Seattle, not the TV! We would love to put some artwork or collection of photos on that wall.
As for the rug, do you think it's too masculine? Should we consider color with pillows?

Comments (28)Persians are nice, but it depends on your lifestyle if you decide to get one. The one we have is in the back of the room, it's round and quite large. Bought it new. Unfortunately that's the spot we find the occasional accident from one of our dogs. Not often, every few months. I clean it by hand, but I can't imagine having a Persian in the front half of the room where the horse dogs sleep. We also need to replace the area rug there because when they were puppies, one of them chewed a couple of spots. Comments (12)In neutral rooms, it can be hard to suggest rugs for others. It’s kind of like choosing art. Do you like florals? Abstracts? Other patterns? Solids? Do you want to bring in some color, a lot of color, or stay more neutral and tone on tone? Preferred style — traditional, modern, transitional, other? Preferred material? Budget? We could post a million different rugs here, based on our own likes, but narrowing it down to your preferences would help with suggestions. Unless you want a very monochromatic look with the two rooms, I wouldn’t stress about being too matchy. Coordinate, yes, but they can be unique. If you haven’t already, try some sites that have mock-up features, such as: Rugs Direct Incredible Rugs and Decor eSales Rugs Rugs USA CB2 (modern styles) Crate & Barrel (modern) I’ve ordered from every one of the above, with all good experiences. Be sure to compare prices — many sites carry the same brands. Comments (24)Hi Elizabeth, Yes, the rug is fairly thin, but with the rug pad it should be good. This is one of the actual customer reviews; I think this little one looks pretty comfy.:) Btw, I like your original idea for a black rug...and not because you can’t use other colors. You definitely can! But the black is striking; plus, imo, a simple black rug works well with your furnishings/style and with a number of the existing elements in your space. And I also like how it provides a nice backdrop for the granite, without competing. As I mentioned, personally I really like the existing granite, so I love a simple backdrop that lets it shine. From my perspective, your instincts on all of this were spot on. You are much more design saavy than you think! :)...See More

I don't like those chairs that face the wall. you should have your furniture situated so that you can take in that view!
Did you see what I posted about the rug? It's not too masculine, but you will need a diff wall color and some decor items. are you up for painting? You can't do a cool, gray rug w/warm gold walls. they don't match.
that RH rug also comes in ivory and silver..would this match?
If I had that room I would lighten up the walls . Do you like the golden color? if so, then your rug needs to have warm colors in them.
give me an idea of what look you like, and I'll see if I can suggest something.

something like this against the long wall w/art or the tv over it. can be wood, or black ,,doesn't have to be white.
I'd rather you have chairs like this, instead of those bulky ones
or if you like the grays, for sure paint the wall and try something like this

5 years agoWe placed the sofa in the position that Room and Board had suggested for the layout. The RH designed told us to just move it away from the way by at least 6 inches.
Here is the photo when it was delivered:
The wall color is not so 'orange' depending on the time of day.
I did see the rug you suggested. We were not so interested in a 'symmetric' pattern, which is why we chose those designs. We were leaning into the blues and greys colors. We wouldn't mind if there were not more than 3 colors, just as long as they were muted together, and maybe the third color is just a hint.

I like the photo of the sofa in the corner, when it was delivered. Then I'd move one of those chairs (actually, sorry, those chairs just don't work in there) in the corner next to the left of the sofa. angle it so it faces the tv.
like this placement. the rug will be large enough that the chair can fit on it. a low glass table for the middle and a hanging light would complete the look.
maybe a few stools, or a bench or chaise, for decor and extra seating. You don't want to block the window view w/those two heavy chairs.
why don't you take a look here on Houzz and see if you like any of their rugs. I can offer you a 5% trade discount if you find something.
