Bungalow Oak Park, Raised 5-panel doors, closet doors? wainscotin
Comments (2)I'm a fellow bungalow owner in Oak Park (N. Lombard), but ours is brick! We restored features in our home to also match what we think was original and we found doors at Jan's Antiques on N. Racine in Chicago. Have you checked there? Jan's prices are reasonable. All our closet doors match the other doors in our home. Also, and this will sound crazy, check with other bungalow owners on your block...many of the homes on 1 block were built by the same builder and have the same interior features. A few of our neighbors, because of their own projects, had extra doors standing in their basements. We retrieved crown molding from one of our neighbors. We have wainscoting in our dining room and it's the shaker style flat panel that you mention. Our doors have 2 recessed panels (small on top and large on bottom) and the paneling looks great. Our dining room, with all original woodwork and built-ins is the reason we purchased our home. What absolutely works in our dining room is that all the wainscoting, doors, baseboard and window trim is stained the same color. I think wainscoting and your doors will be just fine! Good luck with the projects you are undertaking!...See MoreLONG sliding patio door - 2 panel or 3 panel?
Comments (15)What did you end up doing? If you are still deciding, I would advise against a 4 panel door for your 10 foot space. As another poster said, that will result in a lot of posts within a small area. The result will be less glass and a more crowded look. Once you factor in all the posts required for a 4 panel door, and the large section in the middle where the two closing panels meet, you will loose a lot of light and your opening will not actually be that much larger than a 3 panel door. I think 3 panels would work very well and, after allowing for the posts, will leave you with an opening that is around 3 foot wide. A 36" opening is very respectable - also, you will then only have one moving panel which equals less moving parts (see: things that may/will break some day) and only one screen door. A 4 panel door will generally be less weather resistant: two moving panels must join in the middle and try to create a seal with one another, which weakens the door's structure. this counts when a storm kicks up and you get a lot of wind driven rain. with a 3 panel door, each end of the moving panel will always close/seal against a FIXED panel. This is more stable and reliable. i'm not making this up - check the DP rating of a 3 panel door Vs. a 4 panel door for the same manufacturer. The 4 panel doors always have a lower rating. Another negative score against the 4 panel door is that you are forced to have the opening in the center of your room - which makes it difficult to furnish, as you must allow a passage way through the center of a room. Not an efficient use of space in many situations. 3 panels allow the flexibility to have the opening on the left, center, or right side. I'm not an authority on this... just my opinion :-) Good luck! Please let us know what you decided and if you are pleased with the result....See More3-Panel Sliding Patio Door
Comments (4)We had the same reaction to cost when looking at windows and doors over the years but have learned to see it from another perspective. We live in our homes for a long time, may be 20+ years. We are in the house at least 14 hours a day during the week and often 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays. The house needs to keep us relatively safe and comfortable. If possible, it ought to be a living space that we can enjoy. With that in mind, a $5000 slider really is not that expensive. Most of us change cars every 2, 3, 5 or 10 years? Each car is progressively more expensive, there is also the insurance, maintenance, gas and tires and yet we hardly notice the amount of cash invested. How many hours do we spend in a car? A good door once installed properly can last 20+ years easily. $5000 for a slider, installed, sounds reasonable if it includes appropriate low-E coating for your region and is filled with argon gas. We got the same estimate from a Milgard shop for a 9-ft opening. If this slider is of high quality and can reliably enhance your living environment for years to come, it will be worth every penny. Good luck!...See MoreNew doors - 6 panel or 2 panel? Also knobs/levers Q
Comments (34)Agree with Beverly to pick door based on the architecture of your house. Re door hardware------dont buy anything until you have actually felt it in your own hand. Many lever type handles are too thin and feel cheap, or arent shaped correctly and feel awkward in your hand. A really nice handle, whether a lever type or doorknob, will feel great and be easy to use. We have seven exterior doors and have replaced the hardware on six and i can honestly say it is a pleasure to open and close those doors with a solid, well designed and substantial handle. We left the front door alone because the doorknob is integrated into a larger brass plate, very pricey (here from previous owner) and looks fantastic when the brass is polished, but it does not feel as satisfying as opening the other doors, so its not just about money....See Moregirl_wonder
