Carol's Quilting Projects
Comments (18)Ahhh, Carol...Wonderful art work! You and Kudz and Lindasewandsew brought back so many wonderful memories of my Mom...also a quilter. She machined quilt alot and also hand-quilted and tied some sometimes. In her retirement years she made lap robes and baby blanket quilts that she donated down South as a winter Texan...and also here at home to needy Mothers and nursing home folks...and, of course, any new "grandbabies" got blanket quilts! When Mom was dying of cancer, she kept quilting and finished beautiful quilt covers for us 3 kids. I had mine professionally quilted a year after she died and I will take some pics to share with you later. When I was very sick and hospitalized for 3 mos. a few yrs. ago, my kids brought me a quilt from here at home that my Mom had also made...it was a bit raggedy but it made my bed feel more like "home"...a retired couple gave my family their basement to stay in while I was hospitalized, because we were 1-l/2 hr. from home...anyway, her sister was visiting and took my quilt and hand-sewed all the raggedy tears...I didn't know it at the time...but while in rehab, my family told me that story & I cuddled with that quilt to keep going & felt close to my Mom. I love your quilts, Carol...and I do a bit of it myself, machine-quilting...I'm working on a wall-hanging for our teacher son, who loves the Northwoods! Of course, your piece, the "pine trees" calls to me the most! But also the beautiful, beautiful bed size quilts...and I love the patchwork tree skirt! Thanks for sharing! Comments (10)I don't know about fifty, but I did mine in a Q-snap floor model. I can't quilt very far away from myself, so if I started line of quilting that became distant I'd park my needle until I repositioned the quilt in the frame. Working the perimeter of the frame, sometimes I'd have a few threads on every side that were out of my reach to finish. I'd park them and reposition the quilt, and pick up the needles which were now in reach. I didn't want to have to rethread the needles, and I certainly didn't want to bury extra knots and cut thread only to start out again with another buried knot....See MoreAre you quilting this weekend? Comments (22)It looks like summer chores has priority with everyone right now! I haven't even walked into the sewing room yet. I spent most of the morning stripping pine needles off of the branches of 3 pine trees my husband cut down because the power company came along and butchered them AGAIN. They do this every couple of years and the way they wack the trees up they will never amount to anything and they look just awful. So this is free mulch, just time-consuming. Also walked way out to the corner of the property to the pond, he told me an interesting looking plant was blooming out there, so I had to take the camera out to photograph it. I'm doing an album of all the native plants on our 5 acres. Maybe tomorrow I'll mosey into the sewing room ...maybe not....See MoreAnyone done a quilt made from baby clothes?
Comments (5)If I were doing a quilt of this type, I would limit the types of clothes that were used. I would not use knits unless they could be stabilized and I would probably keep the blocks simple, i.e. solid blocks from the clothes or maybe a four-patch or nine-patch. If making a wall hanging, then various fabric types could be mixed, but I wouldn't mix dotted swiss from a dress and Oskosh overalls fabric together for a quilt that would get a lot of use and love - they are two very different weight fabrics. A few years ago I made a beach-themed quilt for a gift for a pre-teen; her mother wanted me to use some fabric from some pants that her daughter had got when they lived in France. The little girl just about wore the favorite pants out! I planned a clothesline in the row quilt with bathing suits since it was a beach theme and cut out a small pair of pants from the worn out pants to hang on the clothesline. It worked out perfectly and the mom was so happy. Teresa Here is the quilt with the little blue "French" pants in the middle of the clothesline:...See Morejackier123
