Comments (22)It forms new stalks each year as the old ones die when there's a hard freeze. I leave mine up after freeze until it looks ratty and then cut it down to near ground level, but you could cut it back as soon as the foliage dies. In a year with little early snow, that might be in December, but in years with a lot of snow, it gets buried and I cut it back in spring before it starts sprouting. Mine had an unusual amount of red in it this year. Most years it is a lovely clear gold. From October, 2013 This post was edited by nhbabs on Fri, Dec 13, 13 at 6:38...See MoreGraywater Harvesting
Comments (4)There are two things to consider when using water from an evaporative cooler. 1. If you use the water that flows over the pads and then exits the cooler you will probably not harm your plants, however, this could be very inefficient depending on how much extra water you are dealing with. Coolers typically use between 90 and 200 gallons of water per day. 2. If the water is recycled through your cooler with a pump and flows over the the pads more than once, accumulated salts in the water will be harmful to your plants. Some coolers have a float in a basin in the bottom that allows fresh water to fill the reservoir. Then the water is cycled to the top of the cooler pads over and over. The water that accumulates can be almost like brine and very salty. Here's a link to more information. Comments (4)I haven't seen it around here, but most of the garden centers I visit are just starting to get stock in. The wholesaler in the link lists Logan's, Homewood, and Atlantic Ave in Raleigh as retail outlets for their products, so I'd start with a few phone calls there. If they can't get it for you, Joann Currier at The Unique Plant in Chapel Hill might be able to do a special order for you. I haven't been over there for a while but I used to stop by regularly, and she's offered to help me track things down in the past. The wholesaler's website lists her as one of their retail outlets, too, so it looks like she does business with them. Here is a link that might be useful: The Unique Plant...See MoreFairy Garden
Comments (3)I made a fairy garden earlier this year for my Grandchildren but need to take some new pics of it as the flowers have grown. I had planned to make it in a washtub but found an old tin bathtub at a yard sale so used that. I placed it in a corner of the garden, filled it with soil, and used small edging plants. I collected some small things at yard sales and thrift shops - a ceramic house that was supposed to be a hanging candle holder, a small bear figurine, a couple of fairies, a tiny birdhouse w/bird, a wire "gazebo", a tiny glass garden totem, and a glass garden "umbrella". These pics were taken 3 months ago right after I finished it and the plants have grown a lot so the Grands and I will make some changes this weekend. Later I'll move the plants to the garden and store the fairies, etc. inside for the winter. Here's the vintage bathtub made into a fairy garden... Here are the two fairies under their glass "umbrella"... The fairies' house (formerly a hanging candle holder)... Tiny glass totem I made just for the fairies... Hope this inspires parents or grandparents to make a fairy garden! :-)...See MoreRelated Professionals
