Glulam beams vs Parlam beams
Comments (4)Glulam (glue laminated timber) beams and Parallam (PSL - Parallel Strand Lumber) beams are trade names that are part of the iLevel products made by Weyerhauser. Glue Laminated Timber beams can be specified in 4 different appearance grades: Premium, Architectural (most common), Industrial, and Framing. The members can also be ordered with factory applied stains or other finishes. This is what an Architectural Appearance Grade Glue Laminated Timber beam looks like:...See MoreAnybody ever use Treated GluLam
Comments (9)I used a 22' treated GluLam on a very large deck project where the homeowner wanted to eliminate 6x6 posts from in front of his large glass frenh doors. This was a few years ago, I stopped by recently to visit another potential customer that lives next door. The GluLam still looked fine. I suggest installing sticky rubberized flashing material to the top edge and down 1 inch on each side to create a "rooftop" for any water draining between the deck boards. Leave the sides and bottom completely open for moisture to escape and dry out. Comments (11)We are thinking about a short-term test: wrapping/taping the beam in saran wrap, holding it together with a clamp, and running a dehumidifier in the room for today and tomorrow to see how much/if any 'condensation' builds up between the saran and the beam. Currently, we are leaning towards a combo of the two suggestions from Springtime Builders and Joseph -- (1) squeezing sealant into the crack and bolting the beam together to prevent the crack from acting as another conduit for moisture. And (2) if the saran wrap testing has a positive result, foam insulating the beam and covering it with a faux beam. For this second step, would you all suggest going with a faux beam, or just drywalling the beam? PS. thank you all for responding! Comments (26)@brianrye I chose a 4 x 12 subway tile for our backsplash....kept it simple. Still needing pulls and/or knobs on cabinets and glass in the upper cabinets in the background. Not sure what glass to do AND not sure if I want pulls or knobs on my upper cabinets!!! Definitely doing pulls on lowers. What do you prefer? As for beams, I am trying to recall the color. I am pretty sure that Sherwin WIlliams matched the color of Benjamin Moore Arborcoat in Oxford Brown...I think!!! I would need to find the can. What I can tell you is that the painters put wood conditioner on a portion of the beam but it brought out the pink in the wood...ick! Seemed we had our success when we just sanded VERY thoroughly and stained with an oil-based stain....not water based, not modified oil!!! I can't stress that enough! Then finished it with a low sheen, water-based poly. Hope that helps!...See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
