help in choosing front look of the new house
Comments (13)I think some structure and focus is needed to simplify the details. The basic structure looks very traditional to me, with cottage details added to the facade. I think I'd stick with more traditional elements; traditional shutters, for instance, rather than board & batten. I'm not understanding all the different window styles, either. Even the porch area has yet another style (transom) going on back there in the shadows; and the paned door sort of adds another to the mix. The shutters are also much too narrow and inappropriate for the style of some of the windows. The ledger stone is not very visible where placed, but also is too busy with the shake siding. I think I'd eliminate the detail on the peak mouldings, and just do them plain, though the porch header will need some detailing. The dark roof areas in the peaks are distracting. If they're functional, and with a gray house, I think I'd do those to match the siding and blend in; though you said you were thinking of another color, like green. If they're just decorative, I'd eliminate them. I'd also do white railings on the porch and not introduce wrought iron. Having only two posts on the porch also looks odd to me. I think I'd add another or reconfigure in some way. Sorry, but it looks like someone was trying to do too many different things on this one house. I'd be worried if this was my builder. I would look for someone, whose work you like, that can help you to pull the exterior together in a cohesive way. Otherwise, some very expensive and permanent mistakes are apt to occur. Good luck working it all out. It's a tremendous undertaking!...See MoreNew Soft-lite windows in our new ICF house.
Comments (8)How do you feel the VT is now that the windows are installed? I am considering whole house replacement (about 40 windows) of Softlite Elements. The sales guy is trying to sell me triple pane as a free upgrade to double pane. However I am hesitant that the triple pane may make it too dark in my home. I drove by a few local homes that have the Elements triple pane installed and the glass does look significantly darker from the street. How does the VT look for your double pane? Your picture had a lower VT than what I see in my Elements brochure. Elements Ultra S glass triple pane has VT 0.40, Elements Low E Glass Super Spacer double pane has VT 0.51. I just don’t want to get stuck at the end of window installation with a whole house that I feel it is too dark inside and nothing I can do about it. I’m looking for some personal feedback here, thanks in advance!...See MoreNeed help choosing our new build front door!
Comments (20)I know double doors seem to lend a grand feeling, but I picture them more on a castle or a church. One front door would look better in my opinion, a style that compliments your home. Agree with comments on simplifying for a more cohesive look. I always wonder, how many times people actually open both of these entry doors. Possibly just at move in time? Not to mention, would they be weak points for break ins along with all the glass?...See MoreHELP! Trying to figure out an exterior color for our new build, blue?
Comments (16)what direction does the front face? have you tried Hale Navy? I think that's the color on the last photo you posted above. Hale Navy with Pale Oak trim. don't be afraid of it looking too dark. against the crisp white, it's going to look great. Heck, I think it would look great in black! speaking of, this is Addisons Wonderland home, in a mix of Soot and Witching Hour. But it does look like soot. the white is Dove Wing. I actually painted my wall is a custom mix of Hale Navy and a deep black. You could play around w/your samples and pick one of the blues you really like but thing are too 'bright', and mix in a deeper navy or thrown in a bit of black. here are some darker tones for that one color you like I just found this one. it's BM Indi Go-Go. If you think the other navys are too dark, this one may be light enough aginst all your shade. Paired here w/warmer whites. I like the crisp whites better. Hudson Bay is another one that is dark, but not too dark. Here's that one pic you asked about: Here's Hale Navy BM VanDeusen Blue: (I've used this color. it's very pretty. if you home is in mostly shade, this may be be dark enough for you) BM Stormy Sky and Classic Gray on the trim BM Ocean Floor beautiful w/the greens. White Trim is White dove Maybe these others will help. Some of these are gray/navys. Decorators white is a cool white. great for a crisp white against the dark blue...See MoreRelated Professionals
