VIOLATION OF PRIVACY! PRIVATE USER NAMES ARE DISPLAYED!!!

This needs to be fixed IMMEDIATELY. Private user names are displayed instead of our public profile names on certain screens and from certain devices. This is completely unacceptable and a HUGE privacy issue.

This is how my name presents on a computer in the "Your Topics" page and the all of the forum pages. This is also how it has always presented in the past on Houzz and Gardenweb. This is my 'public' name. This is on a computer, using chrome as the web browser.

Below I will post a screenshot of how it is presenting on my iPhone and iPad, using Safari. I am not using a mobile app, so I do not know if the same problem exists there.

The names displaying from an iPhone and iPad (while using Safari) are the PRIVATE USER NAMES!!!!!!! These are not our public profile names! These are all private and should NEVER have been displayed! This is a HUGE privacy issue and needs to be fixed IMMEDIATELY! Once this is fixed please DELETE the photo above from this thread.

Edited: I deleted the second screenshot above after I was able to suddenly edit my private and public usernames (when the edit feature did not work before).

O.K., I'm a little frustrated now. I had unlinked the photos I have in PB but still can't keep photos from the viewing public. Next I opened an account with WinkFlash and loaded a few photos. I ran a test, copied a photo into an email and sent it. The person who received the email/photo clicked on the photo and was taken to WinkFlash and could go through the entire album (there were several photos I uploaded) b/c I was logged in at the same time. As soon as I logged out, it wouldn't let my friend back in. The problem is if I'm in the WinkFlash account any linked photos are then open and by turn the whole album is open. I didn't want my friend to see all the photos in the album and I sure don't want to worry when I'm in WinkFlash that anyone who had one linked photo can access all the photos in my albums. Also, I couldn't find any privacy control settings on WinkFlash. While I like being able to send copies of the photos to friends, I don't want them (or anyone else) to have that much access. Is there a site that actually secures your photos? Thanks

I utilize FB daily, and my friends list is minimal. My privacy settings are set to friends only...not friends of friends, so that helps limit my info that gets out. DD1 had gotten a request from BIL's step-daughter (DD's step-cousin twice removed?) and she was vexed about it. They HATED each other growing up, and have never spoken as adults, so why add her? She then culled her list to only those people she actually likes and cares about. I've seen some people with hundreds of 'friends'. Really? OTOH, I am a pubic employee, so a LOT of my info is accessible. My salary, my emails (work), my phone & address. Even the employee benefits I have, so you could find out my doctor, but not my medical records, how much I have in my retirement account and how much I give to charity. So, I guess this is why I'm not as freaked about the whole thing...I agreed to give up a significant amount of privacy when I accepted my job.

Mudhouse, you are correct. I didn't notice that It was just to send a link about the discussion. That seems to me to have limited applicability. Scrappy, yes, I'm trying to message you by clicking on your username in comments you've made subsequent to your original post. As I might to someone else participating in the discussion. I too changed my setting so I could receive a message. Now the trick is how to send one.

Elbeeca, I don't have a LinkedIn Acct, but I think on a premium LinkedIn account, it tells you exactly who viewed your profile. In the regular accounts, it just indicates your profile has been viewed X number of times. Maybe someone with an Acct will confirm or straighten us both out about that. Recently, I attended a talk by an Internet privacy expert. What he was able to find out about audience members was impressive - amounts they donated to charities, club & organization memberships, pictures of their family members, etc. We all know there is no privacy but seeing how easily everything was accessed was eye opening.

Hi there,

The names you are seeing are either the usernames (which have never been private - they are part of your profile url) or the First and Last names entered in your profile settings. Emily that simply is NOT true. The "edit" button was not previously working for me. I reached out to support. They did not fix my username. Suddenly, after I was extremely vocal on different threads, the "edit" button began working for me and I was able to update my previously PRIVATE username and public display name myself.

The username was definitely previously PRIVATE. Regardless of what you are stating. If what you are stating was true, then you could provide timestamped screenshots and I did above, showing that the private username was previously displayed. It simply was NOT. It was PRIVATE. That was the whole reason for having a public display name, which was different from private usernames. The private username was only used for logging in.

It needs to be addressed and Houzz needs to be accountable for this HUGE violation of privacy.

Hi again, Someone on our support team should be reaching out to you shortly to help you. If the edit button was not previously working for you, that may have been an issue with the site, so any additional information you can provide about your browser, operating system, etc would be great. I can tell you that usernames have indeed been part of profile urls since profiles were created. This is not a new feature or functionality. Both usernames and names displayed on profiles can be adjusted to something you are more comfortable with being visible, and not reflective of your actual identity.
